Learn this Common Mistakes in Poultry Farming

and How to Avoid Them:
Poultry farming can be highly rewarding, but avoiding certain mistakes is key to maintaining healthy birds and ensuring a successful operation. Below are some of the most common errors farmers make and how to prevent them.

1. Neglecting to Identify Sick Birds Early
Observing your birds daily is essential to catching health issues before they spread. Healthy birds are active, have bright red or pink combs, and keep their feathers clean and shiny. Signs of sickness include sluggish behavior, loss of appetite, swollen legs, discolored combs, heavy breathing, and reduced egg production. If a bird shows these symptoms, isolate it immediately for treatment and check for injuries or infections before returning it to the flock.

2. Providing Inadequate Housing
Proper housing is vital for ensuring the health and productivity of your birds. Poultry houses should maintain a consistent temperature, as chickens cannot regulate their body heat effectively. Insulated roofs and walls help with this. Additionally, ensure proper airflow by using adjustable curtains that prevent direct drafts while allowing fresh air to circulate. Overcrowding should be avoided, as it leads to stress, feather pecking, and other issues.

3. Using Harmful Chemicals Near Poultry
Chemicals such as insecticides, herbicides, and rodenticides can pose serious risks to your birds. Avoid using these substances near the poultry house or areas where your birds roam. If chemicals must be used, apply them sparingly and ensure the area is free of residues before allowing birds access.

4. Poor Sanitation and Ventilation
Keeping the poultry house clean and well-ventilated is crucial. Dirty, poorly lit, and poorly ventilated coops can lead to respiratory problems, infestations, and reduced egg production. Regularly clean the bedding, sanitize the area, and ensure sufficient airflow.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEAN WATER IN POULTRY

Clean water matters in poultry farming because it supports overall health and well-being of the birds, facilitates efficient nutrient absorption and digestion, regulates body temperature, essential for egg production (75% of an egg is water), boosts immune system function and enhances productivity and growth rates.

Water play roles in poultry metabolism like nutrient transportation, waste elimination, egg formation and maintaining consistent productivity.

By giving your birds clean water, it enhance poultry health and well-being, increase productivity and egg quality, reduce disease risk and mortality rates and improve overall flock performance.

Giving your poultry birds contaminated water can lead to waterborne diseases (e.g., cholera, typhoid), harmful bacteria (e.g., E. coli, Salmonella), parasites (e.g., cryptosporidiosis), weakened immunity, diminished productivity and also increased mortality rates.

You can practice a best water management by developing a water management plan, train staff on water hygiene and maintenance, regularly inspect water systems and maintain accurate records of water quality and consumption.

HOW TO PROVIDE CLEAN WATER FOR POULTRY BIRDS.

1. Use poultry drinkers or waterers with narrow channels or cups minimize contamination.
2. Position drinkers at a comfortable height, secure them to prevent tipping.
3. Clean and disinfect drinkers daily.
4. Provide fresh water daily, change water frequently.
5. Regularly test water for bacteria, pH, and nutrient levels.
6. Keep water sources away from feed, droppings, and dirt.
7. Consider using water filters or purifiers to ensure clean water.
8. Track water intake to detect potential health issues.

Poultry House Ventilation:
====================

Tips on The Ventilations of Poultry Houses:

Proper air flow is very vital for optimal performance of our birds but many farmers often see it as something neglect!

Some problems we have in our farms could be traced to Ventilation and they often arise when not looked into from the onset (brooding).

Air is needed for the breakdown of ingested feed, elimination of ammonia gas and carbon monoxide from the brooder, cool the body of the birds, remove dampness, helps in proper litter management and also reduce the risk of quick spread of diseases.

When a brooder house is poorly ventilated (fully sealed brooder house with tarplis or polyethene papers, it gives room for little or no air to come in. oxygen is needed for food metabolism and when absent, food metabolism is slowed which can result to stunted growth.

The already exhaled air is still reused by the birds which is detrimental to them.

The moisture from the droppings and evaporation from waterers are also trapped thereby making the litter wet and the environment humid. Wet litter serves as a breeding ground for diseases like coccidiosis, salmonellosis etc.

Ammonia gas from the litter is trapped too and can lead to itching, mucus in eyes, ammonia burn, a disease called ammoniac kerato-conjuctivitis, favouring e.coli growth, etc. All these making us spend money on drugs, having more mortalities, decreasing egg production and eventually increasing cost of production.

Poor Ventilation can lead to sudden death, pasted vents, ascites, even poor temperature regulation.

Farmers should give more attention to Ventilation during brooding just like the way we give attention to warmth provision. Older birds need proper Ventilation in all seasons.

Remember a healthy bird is a Swiftie money.

WHAT TO DO?

1. Do not seal the brooder completley! Leave some breathing space. Early cough and flu are results of bad gases not leaving the

Reasons why do female cats scream during mating

It is well observed that a female cat will scream, screech or become very aggressive during or just after mating with the tomcat. When cats mate they caterwaul and it can be quite loud.

The reason for this aggressive behaviour is that the tom cat’s p***s has little barbs or spines on it. When the p***s is inserted the spines lay flat, but when withdrawing the p***s, the spines cause a raking action on the female’s cat’s va**na, causing pain, and so the female reacts by attacking the male.

Why does the tom cat’s p***s have spines?

Female (virgin) cats who have not mated do not ovulate. The pain caused the first time the female cat mates causes shock, initiating the ovulation cycle (this will take a little over 24 hours to actually begin).

The female is then ‘on intense heat’ for around 3 days. A queen may mate as quickly as 30 minutes after the first copulation.

Why does the male (tomcat) bite the female on the neck during mating?

This all explains why the female cat is so angry and tries to swipe the male, and also why the male has to be very careful not to get injured – hence why he holds the female by the neck (scruff of the neck).
