Dogs can get heartworms through the bite of an infected mosquito. When a mosquito carrying heartworm larvae bites a dog, it transfers the larvae into the dog's bloodstream. Over time, the larvae develop into adult heartworms that reside in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of the infected dog.

The life cycle of heartworms involves several stages. Once inside the dog's body, the larvae migrate through the bloodstream and eventually reach the heart and pulmonary arteries. There, they mature into adult worms, which can grow up to 12 inches in length. The adult heartworms reproduce, and their offspring, known as microfilariae, circulate in the dog's bloodstream.

When a mosquito bites an infected dog, it takes in the microfilariae along with the blood. Inside the mosquito, the microfilariae develop further into infective larvae. When this infected mosquito bites another dog, it transmits the larvae, initiating the cycle again.

It's important to note that heartworm disease is primarily transmitted through mosquitoes and cannot be directly passed from one dog to another or from dogs to humans. However, other animals, such as cats and ferrets, can also be infected with heartworms through mosquito bites.

Preventing heartworm infection is crucial for dogs, and various preventive medications are available. These medications work by killing the immature larvae and preventing the development of adult heartworms if a dog is bitten by an infected mosquito. Regular testing and administration of preventive medications as recommended by a veterinarian can help protect dogs from heartworm disease.
