As a responsible dog owner, it's essential to be aware of the potential diseases you can contract from your dogs. Here are some diseases you can get from your pet dogs:
1. Rabies: A viral disease that affects the nervous system, transmitted through bites (saliva ) from an infected dog.
2. Ringworm: A fungal infection that causes skin lesions and can be spread through direct contact with an infected dog's skin or fur.
3. Lyme disease: A bacterial infection spread through tick bites, which can be carried by dogs. Symptoms include fever, headache, and joint pain.
4. Leptospirosis: A bacterial infection that can cause kidney and liver disease, transmitted through contact with an infected dog's urine or contaminated water ( such as swimming in a contaminated pool). Infection can still be transmitted through saliva.
5. Intestinal worm parasites: Intestinal parasites such as hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms can cause digestive issues, anemia, weight loss and respiratory problems depending on localization and can be transmitted through contact with contaminated f***s or soil.
8. Salmonella: A bacterial infection that can cause food poisoning, transmitted through contact with contaminated f***s or food and water bowls. This causes typhoid.
9. Campylobacter: A bacterial infection that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain, transmitted through contact with contaminated f***s or food and water bowls.
10. MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus): A bacterial infection that can cause skin infections, transmitted through contact with an infected dog's skin or mucous membranes.
To minimize the risk of contracting these diseases, make sure to:
Wash your hands frequently, especially after handling your dog or its waste
Keep your dog up-to-date on vaccinations and preventatives (e.g., flea, tick, and heartworm medication)
Practice good hygiene and avoid direct mouth-to-mouth contact with your dog.
Remember, the benefits of dog ownership far outweigh the risks. By taking care of your dog you are also taking care of your own health.
