๐Ÿšจ HORSE OWNERS, TAKE NOTE!
๐Ÿ“Œ What NOT To Do If You Suspect African Horse Sickness (AHS)
| |

๐Ÿด African Horse Sickness (AHS) is a deadly and fast-spreading disease that affects horses, donkeys, and mules โ€” and early action is CRUCIAL to contain outbreaks. But just as important as what you should doโ€ฆ is what you must NOT do.

๐Ÿ”ด Hereโ€™s What NOT to Do:

1. โŒ DO NOT Move the Horse
๐Ÿšซ Donโ€™t transport your horse to a new location. AHS is vector-borne and contagious โ€” moving the horse can accelerate the spread.
๐Ÿ›‘ Keep the animal stable and isolated immediately.

2. โŒ DO NOT Self-Medicate or Delay Veterinary Care
This isnโ€™t the time for herbal teas or DIY drips. AHS is a notifiable disease under the Animal Health Act in Namibia.
๐Ÿ“ž Call a qualified vet immediately - it could save other horses too.

3. โŒ DO NOT Hide the Case
Trying to avoid quarantine or inspections could make things worse.

4. โŒ DO NOT Disregard Insect Control
AHS is spread by Culicoides midges. Donโ€™t ignore insect-proofing.
โœ… Do: Use insect repellents, stabling at dusk/dawn, fans, and mosquito netting.

5. โŒ DO NOT Assume Itโ€™s Something Else
โ€œOh, itโ€™s just a coldโ€ฆโ€
AHS symptoms may resemble other equine illnesses โ€” but never assume.
โš ๏ธ Watch for signs like: high fever, swollen eyes, difficulty breathing, nosebleeds, and sudden death.

๐Ÿ’ก Remember:
If your horse is unwell, donโ€™t panic โ€” but DO act responsibly.
AHS is a notifiable disease in Namibia, meaning it must be reported immediately to a vet or the Directorate of Veterinary Services.

๐Ÿ“Report cases to your nearest State Vet Office.

Be vigilant. Be informed. Be responsible.

๐ŸŒž๐Ÿพ December Pet Care Tips for Namibia ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒž

As we dive into the festive season, donโ€™t forget to keep your furry friends safe and happy! Here are some key tips:

๐Ÿ• Beat the Heat:
Keep pets cool with plenty of shade and fresh water. Avoid walking them during peak heat hours to prevent heatstroke and paw burns.

โ›ˆ๏ธ Storm Safety:
Thunderstorms can be scary! Create a cozy, quiet space to keep them calm and safe.

๐ŸŽ‡ Fireworks Anxiety:
Fireworks are fun for us but not for pets! Keep them indoors, play calming music, and ensure theyโ€™re microchipped in case they panic.

๐ŸŽ„ Holiday Hazards:
Protect your pets from harmful foods (no chocolate or bones!) and secure decorations to avoid accidents.

๐ŸฆŸ Parasite Prevention:
Ticks and fleas are activeโ€”donโ€™t forget their prevention treatments.

๐Ÿ Stay Alert Outdoors:
Watch out for wildlife and snakes when exploring nature.

Letโ€™s make this a season of joy for everyone, including our pets! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’›
