One of the common reasons why dogs attack due to its own
(1) fear
(2) territory being invaded, ie: their sleeping spot, eating spot, or even the spot they do their business; it’s a defense mechanism that they attack, they don’t attack for no reasons.
(3) imbalanced dog. What I do mean by imbalanced? Example, a dog that is high energy but lack of exercise due to lifestyle. This is common when owners don’t provide adequate exercise (physically & mentally), caged-up dogs. Don’t blame the dog, blame the owner as he/she didn’t fulfil a dog’s needs.
There are few ways to detect it through its body language, to name a few:
✏️ if they stare at you and tail is not wagging, mouth closed, raised hackles, body lowered (look like it’s ready to charge), ears back, etc. when you see dogs in these states of mind, best to avoid direct eye contact and just walk away calmly.
How to handle if you’re in such situation?
✏️ If they approach / try to get nearer, don’t run, just turned around n stand there, sometimes you need to raise your energy (shout or yell would help to get them to back off), if you’re calm and assertive enough, they won’t attack and will back off.
I was confronted by about 8-10 dogs and they tried to bully me & my small dog, so I did the 1st method and we managed to leave the scene in one piece. 😮💨 But of course you must always observe the situation carefully and act accordingly. If they started howling or barking that could be a sign they are calling their pack over, so better to just u-turn and walk away if you think your energy is weaker than them.
✏️ very important note, not to challenge a dog by trying to pet, touch, talk, approach the dog if you’re unsure. Dog in that state of mind will perceive anything as threat and bite in order to protect themselves.
I believe in energy as I learnt that’s how they “communicate” and sense things.
Hope this helps you to understand dogs better and learn how to manage any situation like this.
