Senior Dog Series

Often owners find it challenging to be able to give floor traction to their senior dogs who are no so steady on their feet anymore.... so when Sparkles' family showed me this video, my first thought was "so much love went into this set up".

It's not easy to maintain this set up... the mats which were too small at first were stitched together, then some of the carpet mats were given bedsheets for her to lie on, portable air coolers blowing , and even a bedsheets canopy ...

The results are showing... steadier on her feet, not collapsing as much... but as all senior dog owners know, we are also adjusting, experimenting, trying out different ways to "make it work" for the aged dog... nothing is static... the dog is at a life cycle where you find joy in celebrating little milestones in progress and accept there will be set backs until they cannot be overcome. No different from humans. This is what family is.

Sparkles is a super senior girl with spinal issues affecting her mobility. With seniors, there is a delicate balance when CMT is conducted to ensure it not only leaves the dog with better muscle tension but not leave the dog feeling too sore .

Charlie is an 8 year old chihuahua who has recently had some spinal issues... after a course of medication, his vet suggested to do CMT to ease out his spinal muscles .

His muscles along the spine were definitely quite tight, which we gently eased out over the course of 4 consecutive weekly sessions. I did tell his mum not to expect vast improvements within the first session but happily she was happy to see him walking more steadily. We continued on with weekly sessions and we could see improvements.

During the 4th session, I taught his mum some simple exercises they could do to keep his spine limber.

It's great to see owners being pro-active in promoting their baby's healthspan and increasing their odds of having a long quality of life!

Series on Aging Muscles

A challenge that all senior dogs owners face is how to maintain muscle mass in an aging body.

As bodies age, a process called sarcopenia occurs when the dog hits 7-12 years. When this happens muscles become stiffer, fast twitch fibre capacity in muscles reduce, you may also notice the head looking smaller, thigh muscles shrinking.

For bigger size dogs it can start earlier while for smaller dogs, the differences are usually noticed later.

In terms of noticeable actions, you may notice that your dog is more reluctant to jump, is a bit more clumsy or less active.

As a CMT therapist, one of the questions I get asked from owners with senior dogs is how to maintain the healthspan of their muscle.

1. Movement

They still need to move. Like senior humans, it's also a use it or lose it... but it is a balance. Usually flats or gentle slopes are alright. Grass is good for traction. Getting out is also stimulating for their mental health when dementia poses a risk too.

2. Nutrition
Absorption is less efficient. They may become more picky. Health issues like renal or liver may restrict intake of certain proteins. The onus is on owners to try their best to get the right type and right amount of nutrients to nourish the aging body. It's not easy and time consuming but that's how pet responsibility is, from cradle to end of life.

3. Home environment
Adjustments for flooring are usually needed. Mats are your friend at this point. The better the grip the dog has, the better chances their joints will have at surviving the ravages of aging.

With senior dogs, the challenge is multifold.... sometimes, the owner has also aged with the dog... take time to also self love yourself, do core exercises, take good care of your health

Part 1

On 8 Jan, I had a call from a friend. She was sad and very concerned that after an incident while walking , Spotty her dog's tail could not wag freely and she was tucking it between her legs. She was also in discomfort, pacing but no longer her usual self, barking at strangers who come near her porch. A vet visit discovered mild spondylosis ( bone spurs )... a course of pain meds and antiflammatories were prescribed.

Then she called me.

"How can we speed up her healing? I have a holiday trip coming up in March, I don't want to leave her like this."

I told her, spondylosis is coming in senior dogs. The pain occurs when the spurs hit muscle or nerves. In Spotty's case, because the spur was located in the upper spinal region, I would suspect that it had hit a nerve, causing it to affect the tail movement and causing pain and general movement discomfort.

She asked.." Can CMT help?"

" Of course it can. But what I can't tell you is how long it will take to show the effect. It's drug free.. so no immediate effects should be expected"

The efficacy of the treatment also depends on numerous factors:
- initial muscle condition
- age
- how diligent owners are to carry out home rehab exercises taught
- making the home environment conducive to recovery

So one common question owners ask is.. how many sessions to recover? Can the dog recover?

Let's understand this word: recover

Recover means you have removed whatever it was that was causing the problem.

In Malaysia, at least, commonly, there is no surgery done to remove bone spurs on the spine.

So no, there is no recovery from spondylosis. However, it is possible to have recovery from the impingement and also recovery from the lack of mobility from the bone spurs.

Next question.. "Once the dog recovers, as the Hokkien term," Heng ah, eh kia liau"( Phew... can walk already).. yes true, the dog has recovered.. but once you stop whatever you did to help recovery, it is just a matter of time before the old symptoms of mobility issues surface.

This is why owners have to understand, what we are doing is management and providing quality of life even with existing conditions

One CMT session last weekend for T**i, before the CNY break! T**i was boarding with grandparents while mum was on a working trip and mum came back to hear T**i learnt to open the room door and had a good run of the house, with his sister and a stand off with the other resident cats!

Mum was concerned with the state of his muscles , especially since he was diagnosed with early onset of arthritis in his hip joints, despite being just 9 months old. As with all arthritis issues, pain management is one of the keys to controlling the disease to slow down the occurrence of bone spurs or joint calcification. (this is the body's natural reaction to pain and inflammation to protect itself, but unfortunately, it also becomes a problem when it happens).

As you can see, T**i had a good deep sleep after the session, even though in the beginning there was alot of bargaining with him to stay on the table...
