Systomus rubripinnis, commonly known as the Javaen Barb or Red-cheeked Barb, is a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia). They are popular for their striking red finnage and, in some cases, vibrant red/pink coloring on the cheeks.
Minimum Tank Size: These are large, active swimmers that need substantial space, ideally at least 180 x 45 cm (approx. 72" x 18") for long-term care, which equates to a tank of roughly 365+ liters (around 95+ gallons).
• Temperature: 20 – 27 °C (68 – 80.6 °F).
• pH: Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral range, roughly 6.0 - 6.5, though they are adaptable between 5.5 and 8.0.
• Hardness: dH range up to 10.
• Substrate/Decor: They prefer a soft sand substrate. Add driftwood to create shaded, dimmed areas to make them comfortable.
• Lighting: They prefer a dimly lit environment, so floating plants are recommended to diffuse lighting.
• Filter/Flow: They come from rivers and streams, so a strong filter that provides a flow rate 4-5 times the volume of the tank per hour is advised.
