On the freezing night of September 7, 1936, the last thylacine, Tasmania’s “tiger,” died alone at Hobart’s Beaumaris Zoo. Neglected in the cold, it became the final victim of hunting, habitat loss, and human indifference. Once the largest carnivorous marsupial, it’s now a ghost on old film reels, its extinction remembered each year as National Threatened Species Day.
