TWO LORRYLOADS OF WOOD CHIPS DELIVERED BY DBKL

Earlier this week two old massive angsana trees were felled (for safety reasons) at the car park along Lorong Setiabistari 2, Bukit Damansara.

The contractor with the approval of DBKL delivered the wood chips to our Kebun.

Due to the concrete barriers still in place, this morning we moved the wood chips with the help of three Rohingya workers to our proposed planting beds.

UPDATE ON COMPOSTING

On 25th September while awaiting approvals we commenced on a large additional Prof Sultan Ahmad Ismail (an Indian national soil biologist and ecologist) Asian-style compost using cow manure as inoculum. It’s 12ft x 12ft and two feet high and covered with tarpaulin to retain heat and moisture.

BUILDING A RAISED PLANTING BED FOR A HERB GARDEN

On Saturday 11th five of us started to build a raised bed destined to be a herb garden to be headed by Liza Zainol Abidin

What’s left to be done is topping off the raised bed with 10 to 15 bags of planting mix (compost, topsoil and river sand). Since we don’t generate sufficient compost ourselves we intend to purchase the mix.

MORE RAISED BEDS BEING BUILT & PLANTED

In the first week of August we planted on our second raised bed with kang kong or water spinach (ipomoea aquatica). Both this and the earlier sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) leaves are easy to grow from cuttings.

This gave us confidence to plant 16 seedlings on 4 September (three weeks after germination) on our third raised bed with okra or ladies’ fingers (abelmoschus esculentus). Hopefully we should harvest our first produce within two months!

On our next forth raised bed which is being prepared we will grow brinjal also known as aubergine or eggplant (Solanum melongena). The seeds are just being sown.

FIRST NO-DIG RAISED BED FOR PLANTING

With the help of Harbir Gill a small group of no more than five volunteers undertook this task last Sat 31 July. Starting with wood chips, and then layering the planting bed with dried leaves, kitchen scraps and fruit peels, more small leaves and finally a layer of commercial compost.

On this we planted some quick growing sweet potato leaves which we hope harvest soon!

UPDATE No: 2 ON STATUS OF OUR KEBUN

Since our last post in March we are still awaiting approvals! We have continued our composting activities and now have four compost bins.

We have had the authorities visiting our Kebun on 10 April with heavy equipment with no notice to destroy the shed that was at the site long before we started on this project. This cruel act was at the instigation of certain individuals who are not agreeable to the Kebun.
