ENRICHMENT IDEAS FOR YOUR CAT

Cats are amazing, intelligent creatures. Their lifestyle reflects the predatory skills and behaviors needed to hunt food in the wild. A cat’s day includes the need to rest, stalk, chase, pounce, kill, play, eat, and groom among other things. When we don’t provide them opportunities to do these things, they get bored. Boredom can lead to a variety of problems such as destructive behaviors, aggression, anxiety, and more. We all want our cats to be living their best lives!

What Is Enrichment?
Cats must have opportunities to express their natural behaviors. An enriched environment should provide various types of scratching surfaces, outlets for predatory and prey behavior, safe places, and should respect all five of your cat’s senses which provides an environment in which an animal has variety, choice, and control over their daily activities.

Benefits of Enrichment?
-Provides needed mental and physical stimulation
-Decreases stress and boredom
-Decreases unwanted behaviors
-Improves overall quality of life

How Do You Provide Enrichment for Your Cat?
Food Based Enrichment
Food puzzles help to slow down eating, prevent boredom and obesity, and allow cats to eat more instinctively by allowing them to forage and “hunt” for their food. There are various food dispensing toys for cats that you can purchase, and you can even make your own. Start with an easy puzzle and work up to more difficult puzzles based on your individual cat’s preference.
Lunch paper bag/paper bag: put catnip, catnip covered toy mice, or treats inside. They can explore, pounce, and kill (destroy the bag) It’s a great hiding space and a fun toy all at the same time.
Paper towel roll puzzle toys: cut paper towel roll in half, fold in ends and cut a few small to large holes, place in treats. As cats begin to use these more, cut smaller holes to make it more fun for the cats!
Water bottles puzzle toys: Take empty water bottles, remove wrapper, cut a few small to large holes, can leave lid on or off for increasing difficulty for the puzzle toys

Sensory Enrichment
Scent signals are an important part of cat communication and exploration. Cats exposed to new odors are more active and exploratory. Catnip, silvervine, cat grasses, safe houseplants, toys with owner's scent, and pheromones such as Feliway all help encourage exploration and play. Placing a small amount of a scent in paper ball toys, boxes, bags, etc. can provide sensory enrichment.

Visual: A few examples of visual enrichment include interactive cat toys, birdfeeders, cat videos on YouTube, blowing bubbles, and pinwheels. Remember, when playing these videos or letting your kitty watch birds only do so for short periods of time to avoid your cat from becoming frustrated.
Auditory: This can include reading a story to cats, playing bird and nature sounds, and playing music made specifically for cats. (Through a cat’s ear, iCalmCat).
Taste: Offer a variety of different flavored and textured treats
Touch: Many animals respond positively to things like petting and brushing. Along with the touch comes social interaction, which ensures that these social animals receive the attention they need. Make sure to identify the kind of touch the cat appreciates.

Environmental Enrichment
Provide a variety of horizontal and vertical perches and hiding places. Cats will enjoy things like window perches, cat trees, and cat-friendly shelving. Incorporating safe hiding areas is also crucial and allows the cats to get away if needed. Hiding places can be cardboard boxes, tunnels, and paper bags. Cats also need to scratch, so provide various types of scratching surfaces. Scratching posts should be steady and a minimum of three feet to allow them to fully extend their body when scratching.

Social Interactions
All companion animals, including cats, benefit from positive, consistent interactions with their humans. Cats will experience less stress when allowed to choose whether or not to interact with you, rather than having interactions forced upon them. If the cat appears relaxed and wants to interact, it's best to focus petting around the head and cheeks. When your cat moves away, don't force further contact by following your cat or picking them up. Brushing and petting your cats before bed is a good example of how to provide them with positive, consistent, and predictable social interactions.

Outdoor Time
You can give your cat some safe time outdoors by building an outdoor enclosure (often called a catio) and/or walking your cat. Cats can be harness trained or can enjoy walks in a cat stroller.

Train Your Cat
Another form of enrichment can be clicker training your cat. Cats are intelligent and clicker training is a great way to mentally stimulate your cat and teach them new tricks!

There are many benefits to clicker training your cat, it boosts your cat's confidence, encourages creativity and initiative, and helps strengthen the bond between you and your cat.

There is a common misconception that cats cannot be trained and if they can be trained, it is a lot more difficult than dogs. Both of those statements are false. When owners feel that their cats cannot be trained, they also believe cats behavioral problems cannot be resolved. This can often result in fatal consequences for cats; including euthanasia and relinquishment.

Cats can be taught everything including foundation behaviors (targeting, attention), positive husbandry behaviors (nail trims, brushing, and handling), and fun tricks (roll over, high five). Training can also be very effective in stopping and replacing unwanted behaviors.
Lastly, the types of enrichment you can offer your cat is only limited by your imagination so have fun with it!

WHY DO CATS CHASE LASERS?

All cat parents are familiar with the eternal struggle between cat and laser pointer. For something so small and scentless, that little red dot sure can keep cats busy—in spite of (or perhaps because of) the fact that they never really can catch it. Interestingly though, there’s some debate about whether or not laser pointers are a great toy for our feline friends. So why do cats chase lasers, and is it time to ditch the laser in favor of a different type of toy?

The Allure of the Laser
Lasers are inherently stimulating to cats because of what they represent: fast-moving prey. Just because your cat doesn’t have to work hard for its food (unless you count all the effort it takes to meow all morning until you fill up its bowl), doesn’t mean that it’s not hardwired for the job.

As the dot of a laser darts around the room, your cat interprets it as a small animal trying to run and hide. As such, certain inherent feline behaviours come out, notably the innate desire to hunt, pounce, and kill the prey in question. The fact that it’s merely a projection doesn’t matter very much because your cat is operating on auto-pilot, not on intellect.

How Cats See Lasers
There’s another factor at play here too when your cat chases a laser, and that’s the fact that it simply looks appealing. To understand why, it helps to have a base understanding of how your cats’ eyes operate and how they differ from human eyes.

The retina is one of the main structures of the eye. It is composed of two key types of cells: rods and cones. Rods deal with low light vision and detecting movement, while cones help the eye see color. Human eyes have more cones than rods, which means we see the world with a lot of vibrancy. Cats, on the other hand, have more rods than cones, making them experts at picking up even the slightest of movements.

What does this have to do with lasers? It means that they’re pretty hard to ignore. The moment you turn a laser point on your cat is going to pick it up in its peripheral vision, and if it hasn’t quite figured out yet that it can’t actually eat that red dot (or if it knows it can’t but doesn’t care) then that’s all it will take to start its predatory cycle.

The Debate Over Cats and Lasers
It might be surprising to hear that there’s some controversy over whether it’s a good idea to tempt your cat with lasers, but the cat-laser debate is one that has been going on for some time.

The main problem noted by cat enthusiasts who are anti-laser is that having your cat chase a laser is a form of teasing. Remember, your cat is stalking and pouncing on that red dot because its brain is telling it to catch the food and kill it. The cat’s not doing it distinctly as a form of play, even if it’s having fun.

The laser is an unattainable target, and no matter how great your cat’s hunting skills are it’s never going to get to eat it and it’s never going to finish out its predatory cycle. Many cats figure out the ruse and stop interacting with the laser. Others find it immensely frustrating and may start behaving badly as a result. Frustrated cats act out in less than ideal ways, such as by becoming destructive or aggressive. If you notice a connection between playing with your cat and a laser and bad behavior, it’s probably time to put the pointer away for good.

To help make laser pointers more of a game and less of a tease, give your cat a treat or a physical toy right when you're finished playing. That way it’ll get the satisfaction of a “kill,” even if it’s not of the laser itself.

Laser Pointer Safety Tips
Provided that your cat seems to actually enjoy chasing a laser and isn’t just caught in an endless loop of hunt-pounce-disappointment, there’s probably nothing to be worried about. Chasing a laser is a fantastic way for your cat to get some physical and mental exercise, and also lets it tap into its kitty instincts for a bit—something that indoor cats don’t get to do quite as often as they might like to.

Of course, you should still make sure to follow proper safety tips to avoid harming your cat during play. Here are two big ones to note.

Don’t shine the light directly in your cat’s eyes. Even toy lasers emit an incredibly bright light, so you mustn't shine it directly at your cat (or yourself!). If you do, you could cause vision problems and/or eye injuries.

Provide your cat with plenty of other toys. If the laser is your cat’s only outlet for play, it’s more likely that frustration will start to build up. Make sure that it has access to a lot of other objects for hunting and playing with, including catnip toys and wands.

HUKUM JUAL-BELI KUCING PELIHARAAN

Sebelum menjawab apa hukum jual beli kucing, pada dasarnya setiap jual-beli hukumnya adalah Harus. Allah SWT berfirman:

Wallahu a’lam.

RAGDOLL

If you’re looking for a large, affectionate cat that can go with the flow, look no further than the Ragdoll cat. These cats simply go limp with pleasure when they’re being petted, giving them their name. This cat breed is one of the largest out there, but don’t let that intimidate you. Their big blue eyes and loud, throaty purr let you know that these cats are just big softies. This cat is notoriously social, making them a good fit for bustling homes with plenty of activity.

This cat is very new compared to many other breeds. The Ragdoll cat breed was created in California in the 1960s. A cat breeder named Ann Baker wanted to create a beautiful cat with a loving personality. Ann started using domestic medium-haired cats of unknown origin. Josephine, the original mother cat of the breed, was white. Though it took a few generations, Baker eventually produced the first cats that were called Ragdolls. These cats were appreciated for their non-matting fur, large size, and outgoing personality.

The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) began registering Ragdolls in 1993. Today, Ragdolls are the fifth most popular cat breed registered by the CFA.

The Ragdoll has a silky single coat (meaning that it doesn’t have an under layer of fur). It’s meant to be lower-matting than other medium-haired cat coats. That said, this breed still requires brushing at least twice a week to help avoid matting.

Ragdolls are also energetic, social cats. They need regular playtime using wand toys or other interactive cat toys. Most also benefit from being fed out of a feline puzzle feeder. Don’t just leave toys around for your kitty, get up and play with her! This will help keep your cat’s weight down, avoid behavior concerns caused by boredom, and build bonds within the family.

11 THINGS ONLY CAT OWNERS UNDERSTAND

Kitties have many characteristics that we all know and (mostly) love: They're cute, they're cuddly and they're incredibly judgmental, just like your best girlfriend.

But there are also things about cats that only cat owners can truly understand. Some of those things are totally gush-worthy and some of those things are totally disgusting (hello, your cat could be p**ping in a box somewhere in your house this very moment). Together, these things make up the joy that is cat ownership.

NUMBER 1 : You're Never Not Covered in Cat Hair
Trying to keep your clothing free of cat hair isn't worth the effort anymore. After so many attempts at lint rolling, purchasing special vacuum attachments and avoiding dark-colored clothing, you just stopped caring. And, anyway, when your clothes are covered in your cat's hair, it's kind of like taking your kitty with you wherever you go, which is kind of sweet ... right?

NUMBER 2 : You Stopped Putting Any Item on Any Surface
If the internet has taught us anything, it's that cats will knock literally any item off of literally any surface. Want to set up a stylish vignette on your coffee table? Nope, your cat will squash every one of your interior decorating dreams. Putting some fresh flowers on the kitchen counter? Think again. Left your iPhone perilously close to the counter's edge? Hhmmm.

NUMBER 3 : You're Unfazed by Cat Butt in Your Face
There's no other way to say it: Cat owners get up close and personal with their cats' butts often. Despite being a little bit gross, it's actually a good thing if your cat sticks her butt in your face. In fact, it means she likes you!

NUMBER 4 : You Have to Hide Toilet Paper From Your Cat
Whether you buy the bargain brand or invest in the cushiest toilet paper out there, if you want to avoid being stranded on the toilet without toilet paper, you know it's vital to hide your toilet paper from your cat. Ponder this: Do you think he knows what he's doing and just likes to watch you struggle?

NUMBER 5 : Cats Sleep Constantly ... Except Between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.
It seems like cats are snoozing in a sunny spot on the floor constantly. When aren't they snoozing in a sunny spot on the floor? Approximately one to three hours before your alarm clock is supposed to go off. That's when she likes to get her daily exercise, scratch at the walls and climb on your face.

NUMBER 6 : You Forget Your Cat Is Literally Pooping in a Box Somewhere in Your House
We humans would never think about p**ping in a litter box (unless the situation was very, very dire). But it's totally acceptable for your cat to p**p in a box somewhere in your house ... and leave it for you to clean up. And maybe even track some litter around the room, for good measure. Think about it.

NUMBER 7 : Your Cat Loves Cardboard Boxes More Than His Expensive Bed
You spent such a long time choosing the perfect bed for your cat. You read thousands of reviews, chose organic cotton that wouldn't irritate his skin and maybe even added some kitty-sized throw pillows, so he'd feel a little extra comfy and stylish. But whenever a Shopee/Lazada shipment arrives, your cat makes it very clear that a lowly cardboard box is like, one thousand times better than the bed you worked so hard to pick out.

NUMBER 8 : Your Cat Eats Better Food Than You
You'll eat whatever mass produced, conventional food that's on sale at the grocery store. Your cat only eats the highest caliber, gluten-free, non-GMO, organic, raw food sold at your town's farmer's market. And sometimes throws it up on the area rug to show his appreciation.

NUMBER 9 : You've Accepted That Your Cat Is Boss
Don't even bother pretending. In a cat house, we all know who's the boss. Hint: Her favorite pastimes include knocking items off of counters, sitting on your laptop when you're trying to work and meowing incessantly at things that aren't there.

NUMBER 10 : Cats Have No Sense of Personal Space
Cats put their butts in people's faces to show them they like them. They give you zero personal space to show you they love you, but also to remind you that they're in charge.

NUMBER 11 : You Never Know If Your Cat Wants to Cuddle You ... or Bite You
There's nothing better than cuddling on the couch with your kitty ... until you make a single wrong movement, she freaks out, bites you and skitters into another room.

HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS WITH YOUR NEW CAT

While adopting a cat can be hugely rewarding, the first 24 hours in a new home can be stressful for your cat. Giving them space, routine and careful introductions can greatly reduce anxiety levels.

The Journey Home
Cats don’t tend to be great travelers. To minimize any stress, make sure they are transported in a snug, well made and well-ventilated carrier. Including a piece of their bedding inside the carrier can provide them with a reassuringly familiar scent. The journey home should be as quiet and smooth as possible, don’t bring along the family dog and, if possible, leave any noisy and excited children at home.

You may also want to spray the bed and carrier with Feliway before you put the cat in it. This is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring “happy” pheromones found on your cats face. These can have a reassuring effect. Don’t feed them any treats while traveling; if they are stressed this could cause them to vomit.

The First Few Hours - Providing a Safe, Quiet and Secure Space
You should not flood your cat with too many new and stimulating experiences when they first arrive home. For at least the first day, possibly more depending on the cat, it is recommended that they stay in one quiet room to help prevent them from becoming overwhelmed.

Make sure you don't allow any other pets into this space in the beginning and give access to a litter box and fresh water. The room should be peaceful and cozy, and your cat should be able to hide if they wish. If there is no bed or sofa to hide under or behind, then you could create a hiding space with a covered box.

Place the carrier in the room and then leave them to come out when they are ready. Trying to force an interaction with your cat when they are very stressed can hamper successful bonding.

After a Few Hours - Introducing Food
It is better to introduce food after your cat has had at least a few hours in their new home. If they do take the food at the start but are anxious, it could cause them to vomit or increase the chances of an upset stomach.

Your new cat might not eat for the first day or two if they are extremely stressed. Unless they continue to refuse food after this, it is not something you should be overly concerned about.

After Half a Day - Careful Introductions to the Wider Family
Ideally, you should allow your cat a good few hours of quiet time, to adjust to their new surroundings. If, at this point, you want to offer them a little company then do this gradually and calmly.

It is a good idea to start spending time in the room, perhaps just reading a book or watching a quiet TV program. This will allow the cat to get used to your company without it being too stressful or intrusive.

If the cat goes into a hiding place when you enter the room, don’t force them out. Let them come out when they are ready. You may want to reward them with a tasty treat if they approach you, to build up positive interactions.

If you have children, make sure they understand not to chase or annoy the cat, that they are supervised, and that they only interact if the cat approaches them seeking attention.

After 12 Hours - Introducing Toys
If your cat is starting to voluntarily interact with family members you may want to introduce some toys to see if they would like to engage in some play. Of course, if they are still feeling overwhelmed, toys may have to wait a few more days.

What Not to Do in the First 24 Hours
Some things are best left until your cat has had the chance to become settled and relaxed within their immediate surroundings. If they are introduced too quickly, it can cause additional stress, and a poor first experience can make things more difficult going forward.

Introductions With Other Pets
Cats are naturally territorial, and introductions with other cats should not be done immediately. It can sometimes take weeks or months for cats sharing a household to integrate fully. In the initial days, it is best to keep them separated before gradual introductions begin.

If you have smaller pets, they must be kept safe and secure, and you may have to consider whether your cat is allowed access to the room they are in. Because birds and rodents are natural prey for your cat, it could cause over-arousal and also be a source of stress for your small pet when the cat is in their presence.

7 THINGS PEOPLE DO THAT CATS HATE

Does your cat seem upset or anxious? Do its body signals seem negative or is it practicing inappropriate bathroom habits?
What's bothering your cat could very well be something that bothers you, too. From dirty bathrooms to spoiled food to too loud music, cats and humans share more pet peeves than you may think. And believe it or not, you could be making some mistakes as an owner, unknowingly causing these top things cats can't stand. Don't worry—we've got your back—here's how to remedy them.

NUMBER 1
Cats Hate Feeling Lonely
Contrary to popular belief, cats are not solitary animals! It’s true that you can leave your cat alone for longer bouts than you could a dog, but kitties crave attention, companionship, and love just like any other furry friend—or human. If left alone for extended periods of time, it can develop feelings of sadness, lethargy, and even depression.
If you have a busy schedule, be sure to set aside a few minutes each day to spend some quality time with your cat. Even 15 minutes of playtime every few hours will keep it happy and healthy. An even better solution? Consider adopting another cat, so it has a full-time companion.

NUMBER 2
Cats Hate Dirty Litter Boxes
Using a dirty toilet—in public or in a home—is pretty gross, right? Well, cats feel the same way about dirty litter boxes. It’s important to clean out your cat’s litter boxes every day, or at least every other day, depending on the number of cats you have and their bathroom habits.

NUMBER 3
Cats Hate Spoiled Food
You probably don’t want to dig into a big plate of spoiled food—and surprise!—neither does your cat. Not only does stale or spoiled food taste bad, but it can make your cat sick, too.1 Bacteria such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus can grow in food that’s been exposed for too long, especially in the warmer months.

NUMBER 4
Cats Hate Yucky Medicine
When you’re feeling lousy, the last thing you want to do is down some yucky tasting medicine. And the same holds true for your cat. When taking medication, many cats foam at the mouth, hold the pill in their esophagus, or just spit it back out.
Whether your cat needs medication for a cold or infection or has a chronic condition that requires the ongoing administering of medication, it’s vital to make the experience a bit more palatable for kitty.

NUMBER 5
Cats Hate Overly Aggressive Petting
If you have a cat, you know there are only certain areas it will allow you to pet—and if you pet the wrong part, it will hiss, scratch, or bite. Cats can be extremely sensitive to tactile stimuli, so it’s important to be aware of where and how you’re petting them.
Want to keep your cat happy? Cats groom each other on the head and neck—and seriously dislike "full-body" pets down the length of their backs—so try to stick to the areas around its head and neck only. Pay close to attention to its behavior and body signals to understand acceptable and unacceptable petting.

NUMBER 6
Cats Hate Competition From Other Cats
Whether battling over food, space, toys or their humans’ attention, cats can become jealous of one another. Unfortunately, this jealousy can manifest as aggression and, depending on the situation, misdirected aggression.
For example: If a house cat feels threatened by an outdoor cat, but can’t attack it, the house cat may redirect his aggression toward another cat inside the house.

NUMBER 7
Cats Hate Loud Noises
From thunderstorms to arguments to fireworks, lots of loud noises and commotion can seriously stress your cat out.
And chronic stress from loud noises can cause a number of behavioral and health issues, including skittishness, aggression, or depression, as well as hair loss, lack of appetite, and over-grooming.
