The Friesian and The Royal Connection

The name says it all: ‘The Royal Friesian Horse Studbook’ (De Koninklijke Vereniging Het Friesch Paarden-Stamboek). And the many visits of our former queens to Studbook manifestations are testimony to this royal commitment. The bond between the Friesian horse and the House of Orange speaks strongly through the presence of Friesian horses in the Royal Stables, where our present KFPS Chairman Bert Wassenaar is the Crown equerry in command.

This connection between the Royal Family and Friesland, with its inseparable link with the Friesian horse, dates as far back as 1687. That year saw the birth of Johan Willem Friso in Dessau, second son and third child to Hendrik Casimir II van Nassau-Dietz and Henriëtte Amalia van Anhalt-Dessau. At the death of his father in 1696, Johan Willem Friso became King of Nassau-Dietz as well as stadholder of the provinces of Friesland and Groningen.

The Royal Stables houses Friesian horses and every other year they are hitched up to the Gilded Carriage to carry the King and his Queen to the annual congregation of the Dutch parliament, where the monarch traditionally reads the King’s speech. So obviously there is more that links the Royal Family to the province of Friesland than mere genealogy.

There are 33 Friesian in the Royal Carriage and Riding stable at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague, 24 carriege horses and 9 riding horses. In consultation with the Quee, Wassenaar’s predecessor decided to increase the number of Friesians.

The word Royal can also be interpreted in a less literal sense and be used as an adjective: The Royal Friesian. This makes us visualise the majestic personality associated with the Friesian horse. The Friesian horse owes this admiration to its high neck carriage, gracing a noble head with expressive eyes that proudly look out into the world.

KFPS and Friesian Horse

To protect the breed from dying out which almost happened a few times in their history, The Koninklijke Vereniging "Het Friesch Paarden-Stamboek" (KFPS) was formed.

By the meticulous registration of Friesian horses since the time it was founded in 1879, the KFPS has established a breeding program to maintain and further refine the unique characteristics of the Friesian horse.

It is the oldest studbook in the Netherlands and promotes the interests of the Friesian horse in the broadest sense of the word. Today more than 60,000 horses are registered worldwide, and the studbook counts 15,000 official members. Outside the Netherlands these members are organised into their own national associations, which maintain close ties with the KFPS. Most Dutch members are associated with breeding societies, which organise a large number of activities each year.

This consistent breeding policy has produced the Friesian horse we are familiar with today, exhibiting the unique characteristics of the breed and continuing to bear close resemblance to its ancestors. Thus, the Friesian horse belongs to a closed studbook, the pedigrees of all horses can be traced back to the year of the foundation of the (K)FPS.

Every horse of the Friesian breed must meet the requirements as defined by the KFPS.

Let’s refresh our mind about Friesian Horse

“There she is: fiery, strong, intelligent, and looking just a bit superior. As if she knows of her centuries-old heritage. As if she knows of the place, she has in so many hearts.”

The Friesian horse has a longstanding history; the only horse native to the Netherlands, where the Friesian has been known since as far back as the 13th century, evidence has been unearthed that in the days of Emperor Nero the Roman army also included Friesian riders.

Typical of these Black Pearls are the front, the majestic mane and feathering of the lower legs, the jet-black colour and the spacious, powerful elevated gaits. The harmonious build and the noble head, set on a lightly arched neck, complete the aristocratic and fiery appearance. Its amicable character is the key to a great utility breed.

A Friesian horse is an elegant-looking horse flaunting abundant feathers and with a proud bearing. The body is compact and strong.
A more detailed description of its characteristics runs as follows: the Friesian has a graceful head with short, pointed and lively ears.

The neck is characterised by its distinctive vertical build and is long and slightly arched.
They have strong, powerful shoulders. The sturdy legs have ample length and the fetlock joints are adorned with generous fetlocks. The feet must have black soles; stallions with white soles will not be approved for breeding. The coat colour is black with a total absence of markings. Height at withers must be a minimum of 1,58m.

The Friesian horse has increasingly developed itself as a sports horse over the past decades and in doing so has in fact returned to its origins from the agricultural interlude to be a luxuriant and aristocratic carriage horse once again.

Today, thanks to its typical functional characteristics, the Friesian horse now competes with other breeds at the highest levels of equestrian sports.

Stal De Fryslan is the first registered breeding and sales stud farm in Malaysia and probably in Asia.
Now you can own a Friesian horse in Asia and us at Stal De Frylsan will assist you to own this Black Pearl.
