Fast Facts About California(n) Guinea Pigs
Everything you need to know about this beautiful Cali markings and unique gene
Cali is Dominant with the K Gene
You only need one copy of the K gene for Californian markings to appear.
K = Californian
k = Non-Californian
The Cali gene Cannot be carried.
If the guinea pig does not show Californian markings, it does not have the gene. In other words: No visible Cali markings = no K gene.
Although points or markings of Cali guinea pig are a DOMINANT gene and also CANNOT BE CARRIED, Cali x Cali won’t give you a guarenteed of 100% cali pup(s). Unless 1 or both cali parents have 2 cali genes (Homozygous). If both Heterozygous (1 cali gene), non-cali (self) pup(s) is fairly possible.
The results of Punnett square calculations for various pairing conditions are shown below. It is used to predict the genotypes of a particular cross or breeding experiment.
Using Punnett Square Calculator
K - Dominant cali gene
k - Non cali gene
KK - Homozygous (heavily marked or overmarked Cali - often called “Siam”)
Kk - Heterozygous
•Condition 1: Both Parents are Homozygous
Pairing: KK x KK (Cali x Cali)
Outcome: 100% Cali pups
Note: 100% Homozygous
•Condition 2: One parent is Homozygous & other parent is Heterozygous
Pairing: KK x Kk (Cali x Cali)
Outcome: 100% Cali pups
Note: 50% Homozygous; 50% Heterozygous
•Condition 3: Both Parents are Heterozygous
Pairing: Kk x Kk (Cali x Cali)
Outcome: 75% Cali pups; 25% non cali
Note: 50% Heterozygous; 25% Homozygous; 25% non cali
•Condition 4: One parent is Heterozygous & other parent is non cali
Pairing: Kk x kk (Cali x Non-Cali)
Outcome: 50% Cali; 50% non cali
Note: 50% Heterozygous; 50% non cali
Cali markings are visible on the red color series (white, cream, buff, gold, red etc) and can also be seen on Agouti, Argente, Marked varieties (Tan, Lux, Otter, Silver Fox etc)
Cali Markings Are Hidden on the Black Color Series - Black, Chocolate, Lilac, Beige etc.
Cali Markings Can Be Masked By
•White Spotting (WS) hair
•Partial Extension (Tortoiseshell/Brindle gene)
These can hide or interfere with the appearance of the markings.
Cali color markings are determined by the Pigmentation, Eyes color and the Blue Dilution gene (d)
