Here’s a quick little spay day recap, read to the end for the twist:
Yesterday was a cold, rainy day in El Triunfo, and what we expected to be an easy mini campaign quickly took an unexpected turn. We are so incredibly grateful to have such a competent team of veterinarians and volunteers.
Here are the stats:
🐕 11 dogs, 1 in heat
🐈 14 cats, 1 pregnant, 3 in heat
Combine that with the 5 spays we did last weekend, and that brings our 2025 total to 563 spays/neuters!
Now for the twist of the day. We were asked to help pick up and spay a mom dog who had been abandoned in a neighbouring community. Since we were having a slow day and had lots of volunteers, I sent a couple people to go and get her, they immediately let us know that she was in terrible shape. She arrived severely emaciated, one of the skinniest dogs I’ve ever seen.
We opted to move forward and spay her anyways, and lucky that we did, because when we opened her up, we discovered that not only did she have a massive blockage, but also had stomach torsion as well. Despite being far from the clinic and having limited resources, we were able to give her lifesaving surgery, and bring her to a foster who is experienced in caring for medical cases. We knew there was a chance she wouldn’t make it through the night, but were pleased to see her a bit perkier this morning.
We’ll be posting more about her case soon, so make sure you’re following along to get all the updates 🐾
