My father lived many lives, impacting so many people along the way. If you’re reading this, chances are that he’s taught you something too: whether as a chemistry teacher at the Royal College, orchid and pet expert, brother, uncle, mentor, friend, work partner or even acquaintance. For me, my father is the foundation of everything that I know and am. He is part of me and everything that I do reflects him. During this tragedy, when I am told to be strong, my father taught me strength. When I am told to succeed, my father taught me success. When I am told to keep striving, my father taught me perseverance. When I am told to preserve my heart, my father taught me unconditional love.
In this moment where it is almost unbearable to keep going, I remember who I am, who he taught me to be. He was brutally taken away from my brother and I, but he remains alive through his teachings. He taught me, my brother, my family and may have taught you too. In this light, he stays alive through his legacy.
If my dad was not a part of your life, I still know you will learn from his story. May you remember to express your love fully for the people around you. Life is dynamic and if you get too caught up in it, you may forget what really matters; or only remember when it’s too late.
My dad lived many lives, and during his last, he gave my brother and I the world.
