🎆 Fireworks are a big part of celebrations in Mauritius! 🇲🇺

Whether it’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Chinese New Year, or even a big football win like Liverpool vs. Manchester, fireworks light up the skies and bring excitement.

But while we enjoy the show, our furry friends can get frightened and stressed by the loud noises. 🐶🐱

🐱 Caring for Newborn Kittens

In the first few weeks, the mother cat does almost everything her kittens need:

🐾 Protection & feeding

• Her first milk, colostrum, gives vital disease protection.

• She keeps kittens warm, close, and well-fed.

• Kittens find her by following vibrations from her purr.

🐾 Growth milestones

• Birth weight: ~100g → doubles in 1 week → triples in 3 weeks.

• Constant feeding, with kneading paws to keep milk flowing.

• By 4 weeks: using the litter tray and trying solid food.

• By 6 weeks: grooming themselves, each other, and bonding.

🐾 When to step in

Most mothers manage perfectly on their own. Only intervene if she’s unwell or unable to feed. Hand-rearing is possible but demanding, and fragile kittens need round-the-clock care.

💡 Tip: Support mum with plenty of food, fresh water, and a quiet, safe space. She’ll do the rest.

🐾 What to Expect When Your Cat Goes Into Labour 🐾

Most cats give birth without needing help, but here are the key things to look out for:

🐱 𝘽𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙧

• Restlessness, meowing, purring, or panting.

• Loss of appetite about 24 hours before birth.

• Nesting behaviour and seeking comfort.

🐱 𝘿𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙧

1️⃣ Stage One: Early contractions (not always visible). Your cat may scratch at bedding or return to her nest.

2️⃣ Stage Two: Strong contractions. Each kitten is delivered in a fluid sac, which the mother breaks before cleaning and stimulating her kitten. Delivery takes 5–30 minutes per kitten.

3️⃣ Stage Three: The placenta (afterbirth) is passed, usually after each kitten.

What’s normal?

• Kittens born every 10 mins–1 hour.

• A pause of 24–36 hours between kittens is possible.

• Mother usually cleans and feeds kittens right away.

⚠️ Call a vet immediately if:

• 20 minutes of straining produces no kitten.

• A kitten is stuck for more than 10 minutes.

• Your cat shows pain, fever, heavy bleeding, or unusual lethargy.

💡 Tip: Stay close but don’t interfere unless necessary. Once all kittens are born, replace bedding with clean, soft materials.

🐾 3 Fascinating Facts About Veterinary Medicine

1️⃣ The first veterinarians were from Ancient Egypt
Veterinary medicine dates back to around 3000 BCE. The Egyptian Papyrus of Kahun is the earliest known record of veterinary practices.

2️⃣ The oldest known veterinary text was created in India
The Shalihotra Samhita, written during the era of Emperor Ashoka, is one of the earliest veterinary treatises. Ashoka even declared: “Everywhere King Piyadasi (Ashoka) made two kinds of medicine available: medicine for people and medicine for animals.”

3️⃣ The world’s first veterinary school was founded in France
In 1762, Claude Bourgelat established the first veterinary school in Lyon — shaping the modern field of veterinary medicine.
