Matted fur is not a reason to abandon a dog… it’s a cry for help.

Behind every severely matted coat is a dog that has been neglected, not a dog that deserves to be thrown away. Mats don’t happen overnight — they build up over time, tightening, pulling on the skin, causing pain, infections, and sometimes even restricting movement.

And yet, we continue to see dogs dumped, discarded, left to suffer… simply because their condition has become “too much.”

Let’s be clear:
There is **no valid reason** to abandon a dog. Ever.

If a dog is matted, they need grooming.
If they are unwell, they need care.
If you are struggling, you need support.

Abandonment is not a solution — it is cruelty.

At Happy Tails, we see the consequences of this every day. Dogs arriving terrified, in pain, hidden beneath layers of neglect… and still, they wag their tails when shown kindness.

They don’t give up on us.
We should never give up on them.

Be responsible. Ask for help. Choose compassion.

Animal welfare is not only about rescuing dogs and cats! Yesterday we joined as a people to make a point very clear to the government that we need to address this situation in an urgent and humane way. The government has the power to allow foreign mass sterilisation vet teams to come and help with the situation, we have the experience and the roots level view of the issues!

It’s time to work together and choose compassion, responsibility, and real solutions.

We kindly ask for understanding from anyone seeking assistance for a dog in Mauritius.

At present, we are full, under-funded & at a cross roads with regards to animal welfare on the island. We are unable to accept new dogs until we place some of our own into loving homes. Please don’t give up and continue looking for alternative solutions.

If you would like to help us, giving one of our dogs a home is the best way! One dog adopted allows us to rescue another, this is the only way for us to continue doing what we do!

PLEASE Help and share🙏🏽🐾

Public Outrage Over Animal Cruelty Case Raises Serious Concerns About Animal Welfare in Mauritius

Mauritius is once again facing public outrage following the circulation of an extremely disturbing video showing the brutal killing of a dog by a man identifying himself as a dog trainer. The individual, Christopher Sakir, is also alleged to have been breeding dogs without a valid breeder’s licence. The footage, which has widely circulated on social media, depicts an act of extreme violence that has deeply shocked the nation and caused significant distress to animal lovers locally and abroad.

The Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) has confirmed that a report has been filed and that an official case of animal cruelty has been opened. However, despite the severity of the act, the accused has already been released on bail. This development has triggered widespread concern, anger, and a growing sense of injustice among the public.

This case does not exist in isolation. Mauritius already suffers from a poor international reputation when it comes to animal welfare, particularly regarding the treatment of dogs. For years, local and international animal welfare organisations have raised alarms about systemic neglect, inadequate enforcement of animal protection laws, and the lack of meaningful consequences for acts of cruelty. This latest incident only amplifies those concerns and further damages the country’s image on the global stage.

The question must now be asked: how does Mauritius recover from decades of neglect and inaction when it comes to protecting its animals? How can the island position itself as a compassionate, responsible nation while such acts continue to occur with alarming regularity and appear to be met with insufficient accountability?

There are also serious implications for tourism. Mauritius markets itself internationally as a paradise island—peaceful, safe, and humane. Yet stories and images of extreme animal cruelty circulate far beyond our borders, shaping how potential visitors perceive the country. Tourists are increasingly conscious of ethical and social issues, including animal welfare. Many will inevitably question whether they want to support a destination associated with such horror stories.

Numerous studies have established a direct link between violence towards animals and violence towards humans. Allowing acts of animal cruelty to go unpunished is not only a moral failure but also a societal risk. When cruelty is tolerated, it sets a dangerous precedent.

This moment calls for more than public statements. It requires decisive action, transparent legal proceedings, and meaningful reform. Stronger enforcement of existing laws, harsher penalties for animal cruelty, proper regulation of breeders and trainers, and sustained government commitment are essential if Mauritius is to restore public trust and rebuild its international reputation.

Silence and inaction are no longer acceptable. The way this case is handled will send a powerful message—both locally and globally—about what Mauritius stands for and what it is willing to protect.
