Meet Niko, a courageous 2-month-old Pomeranian puppy weighing just 1.6kg. Last Friday, little Niko had an unfortunate fall that left him with a painful forearm injury. His concerned owner rushed him to our clinic, where our team provided immediate first aid and pain relief.

Radiographs taken under light sedation revealed a distal antebrachial fracture—a common injury in small breed puppies. Due to the nature of the break, surgical repair was necessary.

We’re happy to report that Niko’s surgery was a complete success! The fracture was precisely stabilized using a specially designed plate made for tiny bones, ensuring a strong and stable repair.

After some well-earned rest, Niko was reunited with his relieved owner. He’ll now be on crate rest for the next four weeks to allow for proper healing—but with his resilient spirit, we expect a full and excellent recovery.

💙 Please join us in wishing Niko a speedy recovery and a swift return to his playful puppy life!😀

**Betty is testing her new leg!**

Betty is a courageous girl who was brought to us with a severely impaired limb, badly twisted at the level of the wrist. Her muscles had contracted irreversibly, forcing her to walk on the dorsal side of her paw instead of her toes.

The only solution was complete bone fusion at the level of the wrist—a complex surgical procedure called Pancarpal Arthrodesis. We cut the contracted muscles, straightened the limb, removed the articular cartilage from the joint surfaces, inserted bone graft into the joint spaces, and secured everything with a special orthopaedic plate.

Today, just five weeks after surgery, we’re happy to report that bone fusion is progressing well—and Betty is taking her first steps on her leg again! With a little more recovery time, she should soon be walking comfortably on all fours.

**Wishing Betty a future full of happy walks, wagging tails, and all the love she deserves. You've got this, girl! 🐾💛**

What is Ring Fixation?

Ring fixation is a nifty surgical technique used for very small fractures which cannot be fixed using internal plates.

A generic construct is prepared and slid over the limb. Under radiographic guidance, pins are then inserted following the surgical plan, and gradually connected to the frame to form a solid construct.

Once all the pins are connected, x-rays are obtained to check alignment and fragment reduction and we just have to wait for nature to take its course and heal the bone.

The beauty of it all is that this procedure is carried out externally without opening the skin so the blood supply to the bones is only minimally disturbed.

Fascinating isn’t it? 😎

Our Clinic

Pets Veterinary Clinic opened its doors back in February 2002 with a special focus on quality care for its patients. Since then, the clinic evolved into a veterinary centre, or as we call it, a one stop shop clinic, offering all the basic services and also high end surgery, and diagnostic services thanks to the strong investment in training and equipment. We are a growing practice focused on improving upon our existing services to meet the challenges of the ever growing veterinary market in Malta.
