Entry #6 ๐ฆ
Hemidactylus imbricatus
(Carrot-Tail Viper Gecko)
Originally described as Teratolepis fasciata, it was later reclassified under the genus Hemidactylus.
A small but solidly built gecko, reaching around 8โ10 cm total length. The compact body, triangular head, and strongly keeled overlapping scales give it a rough, almost viper-like appearance.
Native primarily to Pakistan, with possible records from northwestern India. It inhabits dry scrublands, rocky outcrops, stone walls, and crevices, blending perfectly with bark, rock, and sand tones. In parts of its range, it shares habitat with other geckos โ including the well-known Eublepharis macularius โ showing how diverse these arid ecosystems are.
Ideal daytime temperatures range around 24โ30ยฐC, with access to a slightly warmer basking area and a natural drop at night. Moderate humidity combined with good ventilation reflects its semi-arid origins.
The thick, tapered tail โ often sand-colored with darker patterning โ gives the species its common name. Combined with the textured scales, it creates a truly prehistoric look.
Mostly nocturnal, alert, and quick-moving. Best appreciated as a display species in a structured setup with rocks and hiding spots.
