*** It's Grass Seed (Hafur) Season!! ***
These few weeks we have had an uprise in cases of grass seeds affecting our patients!
As the weather becomes warm and these seeds dry up they can become a hazard to pets who encounter them. Due to their split shape these can enter but cannot come back out without intervention most times. These seeds can get stuck in:
- Ears
- Paws
- Nose (inhaled)
- Skin
What are the symptoms to look out for?
- Excessive shaking of the ears
- Excessive back to back sneezing (sometimes with a bit of blood)
- Pain in ears
- Swelling/lumps in paws or other part of the body that appear suddenly
What to do if you suspect a grass seed is stuck?
- Do not feed your pet (in case there would be need use of anesthesia to extract the Grass Seed)
- Call the clinic to advise a member of staff and if you cannot get through come down to the clinic straight away
How can we reduce the risk of a grass seed getting stuck?
- Dogs with long coat should have their hair trimmed short, especially the ears and paws, to prevent the seeds getting stuck
- After walks examine your pets to make sure that none of these seeds are stuck and if they are remove them as soon as you see them
- Avoid letting dogs sniff the areas where there are a lot of these seeds around
