🌊🐾 Did You Know Dogs Can Get Water Intoxication?

Most of us love watching our dogs splash, fetch, and play in the water — especially during hot summer days ☀️. But there’s a lesser-known risk many pet parents aren’t aware of: water intoxication, also called hyponatremia.

This can happen when a dog involuntarily swallows too much water — usually during intense swimming or water play, especially in the sea 🌊 or lakes.

Over time, this excess water dilutes the sodium levels in the body, causing an electrolyte imbalance and potentially dangerous cell swelling, including in the brain 🧠.

💡 This is more likely to happen when your dog:
🔁 Repeatedly fetches toys in the water
🌊 Bites or snaps at waves
🏊‍♂️ Swims continuously without breaks
🥏 Is driven by high excitement or obsessive play

⚠️ Be especially careful with smaller dogs, lean dogs, and dogs with endless energy! Their bodies may not tolerate the excess water as well, and they may not stop themselves from overdoing it.
