🐾❤️ **FRENCH BULLDOGS: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT BOAS**

When we think about French Bulldogs, we often think about **BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome)** and respiratory problems.

But their heart deserves attention too.

French Bulldogs can be affected by **congenital heart disease, such as pulmonic stenosis**, as well as acquired cardiac conditions later in life, including **arrhythmogenic disease and heart-base neoplasia**.

And some of these conditions can remain **completely silent for a long time**.

Until signs such as:

• weakness
• exercise intolerance
• collapse or syncope
• breathing difficulties

appear.

By the time clinical signs develop, cardiac disease may already be **well advanced**.

❤️ **This is where preventive cardiology can make a difference.**

A complete cardiac assessment may include:

🩺 Clinical examination
❤️ ECG
📈 Holter monitoring, when indicated
🫀 Echocardiography

For French Bulldogs, **around 4–5 years of age can be an excellent time to include a cardiac check-up as part of their health screening**, even when they appear perfectly healthy.

We cannot prevent every disease.

But we can sometimes **detect it before it becomes a clinical problem.**

Because in veterinary cardiology, **early detection can make a difference.** ❤️

🐶❤️ **Mitral Regurgitation in Dogs**

A heart murmur does not automatically mean that treatment is needed.

One of the most common causes of murmurs in small dogs and in some particular breed is **myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD)**. The mitral valve becomes thickened and does not close properly, allowing blood to flow backwards into the left atrium. This is called **mitral regurgitation**.

An echocardiogram helps assess the valves, the severity of the regurgitation, and the size and function of the heart. These findings help determine the most appropriate management.

MMVD is a progressive disease, so regular check-ups are important to monitor for changes and adjust treatment when needed.

🐾 **A murmur is a finding — the complete cardiac assessment helps guide management.**

If your dog has been diagnosed with a heart murmur, ask your veterinarian whether a cardiology assessment and echocardiogram would be appropriate.

🐾 Sophie, a 3-year-old Pomeranian with a tiny body but a heart that needed special care. ❤️
Sophie was referred by Dr Christa for the evaluation of a heart murmur.
During the cardiology examination performed by Dr Nadia Consiglio, she was diagnosed with a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart defect in which a blood vessel that should close shortly after birth remains open.
This abnormal connection allows blood to flow from the aorta into the pulmonary artery, forcing the heart to work much harder than normal. If left untreated, a PDA can progressively lead to enlargement of the heart, congestive heart failure, and, in advanced cases, irreversible cardiac damage.
Although Sophie was already 3 years old, treatment was still strongly recommended. Even in adult dogs, when the heart is otherwise suitable, closing the PDA can significantly improve long-term prognosis and prevent further cardiac deterioration.
To ensure Sophie received the best possible care, Dr Nadia Consiglio contacted the cardiothoracic surgery team at AniCura, a referral centre with whom she regularly collaborates on complex cardiac cases, particularly with Dr Claretti.
Thanks to this close collaboration, Sophie successfully underwent PDA closure surgery despite weighing only 3 kg.
💙 Today, Sophie is doing very well and can look forward to a healthier future with a heart that functions as it should.
This case highlights the importance of: 🐶 Early investigation of heart murmurs. 🤝 Close collaboration between referring veterinarians, cardiologists, and specialist surgical centres. ❤️ Teamwork in providing the highest standard of care for our patients.
