Does your pet take over the entire couch or bed, leaving you perched on the edge like an unwanted guest?
This is not dominance. It is simple comfort and habit. Your pet has learned that sprawling on soft furniture gets them prime real estate with zero effort. The good news is you can teach them to move on cue without conflict or frustration.
✅ Teach a clear "off" cue. Start with a treat in your hand, lure them off the furniture, and say "off" the moment all four paws hit the floor. Reward immediately.
✅ Practice this 10 to 15 times daily when they are already on the furniture. Do not only use it when you want them to move. Random practice builds understanding.
✅ Give them their own elevated bed placed right next to your couch. Dogs and cats often prefer higher spots with a view. An elevated bed gives them that without taking your space.
✅ Reward them for choosing their own bed. Drop treats on it throughout the day so they discover it is a valuable spot.
✅ If they refuse to move, use a gentle leash or target stick to guide them down. Never push or drag them.
You are teaching a reliable cue that works every time. No yelling, no physical force, just clear communication.
