𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝?

Grass seeds are small, pointy seeds that are attached to the tops of long grass stems. They're often found in meadows and woodland during the summer months.

Paws, ears, nose and under the armpit are the most common affected areas.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝:

• excessively biting or licking the affected area, especially in between the toes
•shaking their head if there is a grass seed in the ear, or pawing at the head
•sneezing excessively if there is a seed up the nose

If the grass seed has pierced the skin, you may notice swelling around the affected area and redness from licking.

Dogs that have longer fur and feathered toes are more prone to be affected by them. It’s best to check the paws, belly area, under the armpit after a walk in the woodlands.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝?

A grass seed that is seen on the surface of your dog’s fur is easily removable, but if you notice the grass seed has burrowed its way into the skin or if you think your dog has a grass seed in their eye or ear, contact your vet immediately.

• Try and avoid letting your dog roam or jump around in long grassy areas
• Check your dog over with your hand when back at home, paying attention to the feet, the inside of the ears and the armpit
• Brush out any seeds you may find and dispose of them in a bin
• Look out for any signs that a grass seed may be irritating your dog

What is Neutering?

Neutering is the removal of the uterus and ovaries in female cats/dogs. This would prevent them from being vocal during the mating season.

Neutering in male cats/dogs is when the testicles are removed. This would prevent any mating habits, marking and helps with aggression.

Why is Neutering important for dogs/cats?

Neutering a female dog/cat is important to reduce the risk of any unwanted pregnancies. It also prevents any infection in the uterus (Pyometra) which would then end up in emergency surgery or sometimes even worse.

Neutering stray cats is important to reduce the amount of stray cats on our busy streets. A lot of cats not neutered will end up in a lot of kittens running in busy roads. It could be dangerous for drivers and fatal for the cats/kittens.

Here are Nikka and Prince, they came to the clinic today for their 2nd vaccine 💉. After 3 weeks they will come for their last vaccine and then they can go out and explore the world.

They will also be getting their microchip done in case they get lost.

Vaccines are very important for puppies to prevent viruses 🦠
