In a beautiful lake resort, Pretor, by the Lake Prespa in North Macedonia live some vile people. This beautiful nature has not mellowed the hearts of its residents. They are as cruel to animals and particularly to dogs as in the rest of the Balkans.
Having returned to this, my birthplace, after having spent half of my life abroad, I became acquainted with the cruel fate of strays. Poisoning, stoning, abandoning, puppies thrown in the garbage…. is a regular occurrence. Before I knew it, I became an ardent dogs’ protector and rescuer and ended up being as hated and badly treated by my co-residents as the dogs themselves. 'Don't give them food!', they would scream at me. 'That is why they come around. If you don't give them food, they will stay away!', it is their callous advice. On a few occasions I have been physically attacked for feeding the strays.
But not only I would give them food. Under my care, strays of this area are fed, vaccinated, protected from parasites and neutered. True, sometimes dogs can be nuisance. So, on several occasions I have been denounced to the authorities, but I have always somehow wriggled out. Sensible policemen apparently had said: ‘But, hey, we have no basis here… she alone is doing what the country should be doing’… But the country is doing absolutely nothing. These privileged nincompoops with their second homes in this tourist resort even had mounted a petition to chase me completely out of the settlement. Their ludicrous threats and animosity are constantly hanging above my head.
We remain and fight entirely on our own, my dogs and I. At any one time I have about 16 – 20 dogs living literally with me and I care for many more dogs scattered around the settlement. Over the last six years that I have been living here I managed to find homes, here or abroad, for hundreds of dogs. While any help, financial or otherwise, regarding food and veterinary expenses is most needed and gratefully accepted, the best help I would beg for these beautiful souls is to be offered a forever home.
Please look in the section 'Photos >Albums' for detailed descriptions of the dogs on the photo that are currently available for adoption.
