THEY NEED YOUR HELP!
In the winter of 2010 I have moved to live to the social house on Lomonosov street and then I saw three tiny kittens looking out from the fence. They were very careful and I decided not to pick them up at once and I began to feed them. There are no cellars in our house so they lived in some old sheds. I only had a purpose to save and help these little creatures who were on the street against their will. They have grown up and have got used to me. They turned to be three sisters. I have brought two home, and the other lady has taken the third one. Later that spring, there were found many more cats under the same fence. All of them were starving and wild. Together we tried to support them as we could we come to feed them, but they weren’t there. We called them, but they didn’t show up. When we saw them out the window, we ran out to feed them.
That situation continued till the end of summer of 2011 and then later the younger cats came with lots of small kittens. There were so many of them that we couldn’t count them all. Then we began to look for the homes for the smallest kittens, provided the new owners with the food for them. We found homes for all the smallest ones, but those who were 4 or 5 months old remained homeless living in the yard with the other 4 or 5 cats. We were worried that if we don’t take any precautions the quantity of them will increase dramatically. Then we, first of all, have sterilized all the female cats and later the males, thanks to the wonderful woman Sandra who, since then, helps us with sterilization of animals as there is an increase of the cats every year. Usually the new cats are not castrated, hungry, sick and aggressive at first. A lot of them, however, were taken to new families and found their homes.
Thanks to the previous land owner who put a fence around his territory near our house and gave us the keys from a gate so the cats could feel safe there.
In the semi-burned-down shed we have made boxes of polyfoam. One man has brought lodges and blankets to warm them. The other man who fed them too has brought a big carpet. So the main cat family and the other cats began to live in the shed together.
Though all these years we looking after these cats together with the colleague (all her earnings were spent on the cat’s needs). Then, a year and a half ago, another woman came and offered her help. There were three of us until that spring. At the moment we are elderly women and our health doesn't allow us to look after the cats as we used to do. Whenever it is possible they come, but, generally now, all the responsibility for animals is on me. I would like to thank many residents of our house who spend their money and help us to get the food for the cats, unfortunately, most of them are gone. However, there are some people who donate coupe of euros from their pension every month.
At the moment there are more than 20 cats in our family.
This year there is a new land owner and we are worried about what might happen with our cat's family. He has other plans for that land, so that means we will have to find other place for the cats to stay in. Thanks to the Riga City council, it was succeeded to agree about installation of lodges for cats on the area of self-government (near our house).
The cat-bistro was installed this summer. A very practical inside and fun looking on the outside lodge. The cats liked it so much, so they don’t only use it as a canteen but also as a place for resting and hiding from the bad weather. (once there was a strong wind, and five cats have climbed inside and have hidden from bad weather there!). We are very grateful to people who have made these lodges with their own hands and we kindly ask them to build more winter lodges with windows, as the cats enjoy spending their time there watching what is happening outside. The lodges are cozy, warm and dry. The winter is approaching and any time the new owner might ask us leave the territory and all the cats will stay outside without the shelter.
