As with many species within the genus Messor, Messor laboriosus ants are characterized by their low maintenance requirements, which positions them as an ideal selection for beginner antkeepers. This particular species presents an aesthetically pleasing external morphology, featuring a prominently defined thoracic segment. While their staple diet is composed of plant seeds, they also readily consume protein, collecting the carcasses of invertebrate animals. Messor laboriosus are naturally distributed across the steppe and desert territories, encompassing Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Southern Russia, and Transcaucasia. 🐜

Formica cinerea ants are the dominant species in the area where their nest is located and often form large colonies of several nests. Therefore, any attempts by ants of other species to compete with them are strongly discouraged. The ants have captured a queen, presumably Formica polyctena. Although Formica polyctena ants are a related species, they also dominate their environment, so the outcome of this fight is known. Such is wild nature!
