Fungal Culture:

Ringworm (Dermatophytosis) is one of the most common skin conditions in dogs. Despite the name, it isn't caused by a worm at all, but rather by a group of fungi—most commonly “Microsporum canis”, “Microsporum gypseum”, and “Trichophyton mentagrophytes”.
These fungi live in the superficial layers of the skin and hair follicles, feeding on keratin.
---
Clinical Signs and Appearance
In dogs, ringworm typically manifests as one or more focal areas of hair loss (alopecia). These areas often look like:
*Circular Patches: The classic "ring" look, though this isn't always perfectly circular.
* Crusty or Scaly Skin: The center of the patch may look clear, while the edges are red and inflamed.
* Brittle Hair: The fungus weakens the hair shaft, causing it to break off near the skin.
* Inflamed Follicles (Kerions): In some cases, a raised, nodular, and oozing lesion can form.
Transmission and Zoonotic Risk
Ringworm is highly contagious. It spreads through:
1. Direct Contact: Touching an infected animal.
2. Fomites: Contaminated objects like brushes, bedding, clippers, or even carpet.
3. The Environment: Fungal spores can survive on surfaces for up to 18 months.
Note: Ringworm is “zoonotic”, meaning it can easily spread from dogs to humans, particularly children or individuals with weakened immune systems. If you are handling a dog suspected of having ringworm, wearing gloves and frequent hand-washing are essential.
Diagnosis
Because ringworm can look like many other skin conditions (such as staph infections or mange), a definitive diagnosis usually requires:
* Wood’s Lamp: A specialized UV light where some species of *M. canis* will fluoresce apple-green.
* Trichogram: Examining hair shafts under a microscope for fungal spores.
* Fungal Culture (DTM): The most reliable method, where skin scrapings are placed on a growth medium to see if the fungus develops over 7–14 days.
Treatment Overview
Treatment is usually multi-modal to ensure the infection is cleared and doesn't recur:
* Topical Therapy: Antifungal shampoos, creams, or lime sulfur dips to kill spores on the coat.
* Oral Medication: Systematic antifungals (like Itraconazole or Ketoconazole) for more widespread cases.
* Environmental Cleaning:*Thorough vacuuming and disinfecting surfaces with a diluted bleach solution (1:10) to eliminate lingering spores.
