Hidden in the jungle’s mangroves, “Camp Kush” by Hostel Unawatuna is a real backpacker’s gem, only a five minutes walk from the train station and a short tuk-tuk ride away from all the beach tumult. In our, what we like to call a backpacker resort, you’ll find not only the most laid back atmosphere in a safari like scenery but also many other wonderful travellers to socialise with. and Pablo, our two wild ponies, or Mandy and Kush, our two lovely dogs, you’ll encounter here countless monkeys, lizards, crabs, turtles and birds, while slurping a coconut in good company, listening to eclectic music. Our doors are open for people from all walks of life, for whom we offer comfortable accommodation in our ventilated tipis, a kayak and boat which you can take out on the neighbouring river for free, a mangrove maze and, naturally, advice on what to do in and around Unawatuna. Only 4 km from the famous Galle Fort away, Camp Kush has in the neighbourhood three different beaches with a lot to offer. It's the perfect spot to learn how to surf and every night a different bar holds a beach party.

These beautiful pineapples invite you at the entrance to our chill-out space.
Although looking so tasty, they do not end up in our delicious pineapple curry.
You are more than welcome to get a taste of our special pineapple curry for dinner though.
Without putting expectations too high, it‘ll bring you to food heaven straight away!🍍

Our Story

Hidden away in the mangroves of Unawatuna, Camp Kush is a backpacker’s paradise. We like to think of ourselves as a backpacker resort - all of the palm trees and gorgeous surroundings, but without the screaming children and ridiculous prices. At Camp Kush we take pride in doing the simple things right: great food, great music and amazing people.

Stay in exotic, native-american inspired teepees surrounded by 5 acres of lush jungle and beautiful wildlife. But don’t worry, while we’re tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main roads we’re only a 5 minute tuk-tuk ride away from some of the best bars, surf points and beaches the South Coast has to offer. Spend the evenings sipping arrack and swapping stories with fellow travellers in our huge communal area, or head out to one of the live music nights or beach parties that every night. Want to swim with turtles? Visit the famous Galle fort? Find cheap surfboard hire? Just ask us and we’ll point you in the right direction.

We also offer affordable scooter & tuk-tuk hire, a delicious vegetarian/vegan buffet dinner every night and the company of 4 friendly doggos: Kush, Mandy, Bruno Mars & Elsa. Our doors are open to travellers from all walks of life and we treat each guest like family... but we do enforce a strict no di*****ds policy :)
