The Raccoon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon procyon) was scientifically described in 2016 most fish in the trade today are only a generation or two from wild stock, and it shows in how they respond to conditions. The coloration keepers rave about only fully develops in soft, acidic water; what’s sitting in a shop tank under hard water and standard lighting is a fraction of what this fish actually looks like. It gets labeled “easy community tetra” constantly, but hard water tanks produce dull, skittish fish that never reach their potential. People who’ve kept them in blackwater setups and people who’ve kept them in standard community tanks are genuinely describing a different fish.

Tucanoichthys tucano looks almost fake once settled, but this is one of those tiny blackwater fish that declines fast in bright, mineral heavy community tanks. Healthy groups stay surprisingly visible when kept over leaf litter with microfoods available all day instead of one big feeding.
