The Animals' Welfare and Protection Association (AWPA) was formed and registered under the Companies' Ordinance in 1963 by a small group of animal lovers, concerned by the distressing conditions that stray animals are subject to in Sri Lanka. Thereafter, the Association was certified as a voluntary organization under the Voluntary Social Service Organization Act No. 31 of 1980. Organ

isational Goals

- To ensure the sustainability of the shelters and optimal use of the available resources.
- To facilitate adoption of homeless animals and promote responsible pet ownership
- To prevent unwanted cat and dog litters through sterilization.
- To promote public interest in the welfare and protection of animals.
- To eradicate rabies through control of the stray dog population. Organisational Policies

- Sterilization is the only humane solution to reduce the population of unwanted dogs and cats - We are a 'no kill' shelter!
- Provision of comfortable and safe shelters is important as transit homes for animals awaiting re-homing;for rehabilitation of injured animals; for caring of old and hearing/vision impaired animals which cannot survive as strays; and to house fierce animals which are a threat to the local community.
- Develop public awareness on animal welfare through education
- Recognize and respect the rights of all animals to live free
- Safeguard and campaign for the rights and interests of all animals.

Today’s Shelter Dana is offered with love by Nilmini De Sylva in memory of Blossom, one year after she crossed the rainbow bridge on 22.08.2025🌈🐾

Rescued from a shelter just days before she was scheduled for euthanasia, Blossom was a loving, special-needs girl—captivating, gentle, incredibly intelligent, and truly one of a kind.

She is deeply missed and forever cherished. 💜

May Blossom be blessed through this compassionate dana, which will help provide food for the 400+ animals in our shelters.

“ One year death anniversary of darling Hugo on 14th and on 15th it is our dearest Digby’s birthday.
Dana given to invoke Merit to our voiceless lovables who have left us - Lika, Bimbo, Digby, Skipper, Mopsy, Hugo and Tabby our chubby cat. May they be born as human beings in loving, caring and happy homes.”

Rescue Alert:
Knocked down by a speeding vehicle, this sweet girl was flung into a drain, left whimpering in severe pain. Her cries were heard clearly. Found on Sri Gunaratne Rd, Mount Lavinia.

She has a fractured pelvis, painful lacerations… and an old injury that had already cost her one eye.

And it just doesn’t seem fair. This is her second set of injuries. We can’t understand why, after everything she had been through, she was put back onto the streets — especially in an area that, according to residents, wasn’t even where she came from.

Do you recognise her? Particularly in the Mount Lavinia area? Please get in touch. Someone may know her story or where she belongs.

She is safe now, in hospital; and receiving the care she desperately needs but her case is complicated.

Despite all she is going through, she is the sweetest girl, timid but responsive to kindness and affection.

And our veterinary bills are already overwhelming.
