Not every abdominal mass is where you expect it to be.
In this fascinating case, advanced CT imaging revealed a mass arising from an ectopic spleen — an uncommon finding that required rapid and precise surgical intervention.
Using advanced vessel sealing technology, Dr. Roy Hassoun performed a swift and controlled resection in only 20 minutes, minimizing surgical time and tissue trauma for the patient.
The removed tissue has now been submitted for histopathological analysis to determine the exact nature of the mass and guide the next steps in management.
At Lebanese Veterinary Referrals, collaboration between advanced imaging, surgical expertise, and pathology allows us to tackle even the most unusual cases with precision and efficiency.

“Two years ago, we were told he might never walk again…”
At 8 years old, this little Yorkie was presented with severe weakness that progressed to paralysis. He was diagnosed with a chronic lumbar disc herniation — a life-changing condition for both him and his family.
Recovery doesn’t always come immediately… but with dedication to physiotherapy and consistent care, he slowly regained strength. Step by step, he found his way back to walking.
Today, at 10 years old, he continues his maintenance physiotherapy sessions — staying strong, mobile, and enjoying life.
A journey that reminds us: patience, persistence, and the right support can truly change outcomes. 💚🐾

👂🏻 During routine video-otoscopic examinations in veterinary otology, unexpected findings can arise without leaving room for misdiagnosis of the ongoing condition, even when the patient shows no clinical signs (as in this case). These exams are essential for early detection and management of ear diseases, ultimately improving animal welfare.

• Early detection: identifies the type of inflammation before it worsens
• Parasite check: helps identify ear mites and infestations
• Eardrum assessment: ensures safe and appropriate treatment
• Foreign body detection: finds debris like grass seeds or foxtails
• Monitoring chronic cases: tracks ongoing ear conditions
• Treatment follow-up: evaluates response to therapy (e.g., OTIIS-3 score)
• Veterinarian safety: ear conditions can be painful, making safe handling essential

🔍 In this case, the video-otoscopic exam revealed unilateral suppurative discharge in the right ear. A CT scan confirmed intact, air-filled tympanic bullae but showed the presence of soft tissue material. Under general anesthesia, video-otoendoscopic examination identified an inflammatory polyp completely obstructing the external ear canal, the primary underlying cause of the suppurative discharge.
🕰️ This case highlights the importance of routine checks in detecting hidden issues early, before they progress into more complex conditions.

A Quaker parrot was presented to our internist with what initially appeared to be a behavioral issue—automutilation with lesions over the body and under the wings.
But in avian medicine, behavior is often just the tip of the iceberg. Respiratory disease in birds can present with subtle, indirect signs long before obvious symptoms develop. Discomfort, hypoxia, or chronic irritation may lead to feather plucking or self-trauma, masking the true underlying cause.
Radiographic evaluation revealed respiratory involvement, highlighting the importance of looking beyond the surface.
Not every respiratory case will show classic signs like nasal or ocular discharge—making thorough investigation essential.
Because sometimes, what looks behavioral… is actually medical.

A 9-year-old chocolate Lab presented with a rapidly progressive nasal ulcer, initially diagnosed as pemphigus foliaceus. But when the lesion didn’t behave as expected, a second opinion changed the course entirely.
Our dermatologist suspected a more aggressive disease — confirmed on a specialized biopsy as squamous cell carcinoma. CT imaging showed no evidence of metastatic spread at this stage, offering a critical window for intervention.
A comprehensive plan was then set: staging and medical management guided by our internist, alongside an extensive surgical approach carefully planned by our specialized surgeon.
A powerful reminder that questioning a diagnosis can make all the difference — especially when timing is everything.

Thoracic and Lumbar Herniated Discs
The ball provides external support for the body when the nervous system isn’t adequately maintaining stability. By doing this, it helps retrain and re-educate the nervous system to properly support and coordinate the four limbs.

Morry, our senior ferret, presented with a large skin mass over the lumbar region. A full metastatic assessment was performed alongside FNA. While cytology was compatible with a mastocytoma, a common and often benign tumor in ferrets, abdominal ultrasound revealed multiple masses consistent with lymphoma, one of the most frequent tumors in older ferrets.
A tailored, multimodal approach was initiated for Morry, including plasma therapy to manage the infected skin mass and oral chemotherapy targeting both conditions.
A reminder that even seemingly benign lesions deserve thorough investigation because our patients often have more than one story to tell.
