●Breast Cancer Awareness Month: A Global Call to Action●
October is recognized globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a dedicated time to highlight the importance of education, early detection, and research. This annual campaign, often symbolized by the pink ribbon, encourages people to be proactive about their breast health, learn the signs and symptoms, and support efforts toward prevention and finding a cure. Timely screenings, like mammograms, are crucial for improving outcomes and survival rates.
●Breast Cancer in Our Furry Friends●
It's not just humans who are affected; breast cancer, or mammary tumors, is one of the most common cancers in female dogs and cats, particularly those who are unspayed or spayed later in life.
In dogs, about 50% of mammary tumors are malignant, and early spaying (before the first heat cycle) drastically reduces the risk.
In cats, however, about 85-90% of mammary tumors are malignant and tend to be more aggressive.
Pet owners should regularly check their pets for lumps or masses along the mammary chain, as well as look for swelling, discharge from the ni***es, or any changes in health or behavior. Early detection and veterinary care, which often involves surgical removal, are key to a better prognosis for our beloved companions.
