OL DONYO SABUK NATIONAL PARK
Ol donyo Sabuk National park is dominated by a small mountain known as KILIMAMBOGO, covered in montane forest. The Park is home to 45 species of birds including the white-browed sparrow weaver, grey- headed sparrow weaver, African pied wagtail, mourning dove, augur buzzard, African hawk eagle and purple-breasted sunbird. Buffalo are the dominant animals in the ecosystem and other wildlife include bushbucks, leopards, olive baboons, aardvarks, porcupines, mongoose, pythons and monitor lizard. Unfortunately, Ol donyo Sabuk National park is not the best place to see the animals mentioned here, due to the mountain’s steep terrain. Olive baboons and a few other species of monkeys are however the only wild animals that comes out in the open to receive food from visitors. For bird lovers, this place is really excellent.
The 9 km drive or hike up the summit from the main gate is majorly one of the activities visitors come to enjoy here. The hike up to the summit of this small mountain takes approximately 4 hours. This exercise can be described as moderately challenging and therefore most healthy people can do the hike with just a little bit more effort.

Amboseli National Park and it’s friends are still morning the death of an iconic ‘’super tusker’’ christened Craig which happened on 3rd January 2026.Even in sadness we can say that all is not lost, there is yet another supper tusker which goes by the name Tee Jay or simply TJ.

Tee Jay was born in 1988 to Talullah from the TD family. It is in its prime age of 30 years. Tee Jay has long, sweeping ivory and calm, commanding presence. It carries not just tusks, but also a legacy and hope.

The presence of Tee Jay in Amboseli national park represents hope and continuity. It too like Craig has long and beautiful looking tusks and still maintains calm. This adorable giant and all other elephants that roams this Amboseli haven help in defining this amazing ecosystem.

It is a fact that it is becoming increasing rare to find giant tuskers like Tee Jay owing to a number of factors that endangers their very existence. One of the worst factors is poaching, loss of ecosystem friendly to elephants due to human activities and sometimes inadequate elephant conservation programs in some places.

The existence of Tee Jay and indeed all other Jumbo populations in Amboseli and all other wildlife parks in Kenya is indeed a success story of resilience by the government of Kenya through KWS and of course all other conservation partners both local and international ones.

We in ‘Petkins Tours and Safaris’ wish our surviving supper tusker, Tee Jay, a healthy long life. May it’s great look appear in many people’s photos and memories across the globe.

To visit Tee Jay in Amboseli National Park or to tour any other great places of attractions that Kenya is rich in, please get in touch with us.

A Kenyan elephant that has been one of Africa's largest male tuskers has died of a natural cause.
The iconic animal was lovingly known as Craig, which died of natural cause on the Saturday, morning of 3 January 2026 at Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya, conservationists confirmed.
Craig had just turned 54 years old. It led a long life and definitely fathered many calves.

Craig the elephant was famous for his long tusks, and was quite an undisputed attraction in Amboseli National park, in Kenya.

Craig was named an ambassador for the popular Kenyan lager brand Tusker in the year 2021.’’Tusker’’ is actually a name also used for adult male elephants with tusks.

Craig was a rare class of bull elephants and one of the last remaining super tuskers in Africa. It’s two tusks weighed over 45kg each. This really made it quite an iconic elephant in the whole of Africa.

This iconic tusker was quite a darling of everyone who had a chance to meet it, owing to its calm nature and majestic posture. It would appear to stand patiently as visitors photographed it.

The natural death of Craig in its full age is indeed a success story of elephant conservation effort by Kenyan government, international conservation partners and of course by the local community.

Fare thee well our beloved Claig.
