Building a dairy farm in Kenya is a great way to earn money, but many farmers make a big mistake. They spend Ksh 500,000 just to build a fancy cow shed. This sounds like a good idea, but it often leads to "bankruptcy," which means the farmer runs out of money and the business fails. Here is why spending too much on a building is a bad trap.

1. The Shed Doesn't Make Milk
The most important thing to remember is that cows make milk, not buildings. If you spend all your money on stones, cement, and a fancy roof, you might not have enough money left to buy high-quality cows. It is better to have a simple shed with amazing cows than a "cow palace" with no cows inside!

2. Buying the Best Cows
A "pedigree" cow is a special type of cow that produces a lot of milk. These cows are expensive. If you spend your Ksh 500,000 on a building, you are wasting money that could have bought three or four of these great cows. A simple shed made of timber and iron sheets works just fine as long as it is clean and dry.

3. Money for Food and Medicine
Cows are like athletes; they need very good food (called silage and concentrates) and vitamins to stay healthy. This costs a lot of money every month. Many farmers spend all their savings on the shed and then realize they can’t afford to feed the cows properly. If a cow doesn't eat well, she won't give milk, and the farmer won't make any money.

4. Keeping Cows Healthy
Sometimes, fancy stone sheds are actually bad for cows. If the walls are too high and there isn't enough fresh air, the cows can get sick with diseases like pneumonia. A cheaper shed with open sides lets in fresh air, which keeps the cows happy and healthy.

5. The Danger of Loans
If a farmer borrows money from a bank to build an expensive shed, they have to pay it back with extra money called interest. If the cows get sick or milk prices go down, the farmer might not be able to pay the bank back. This is how they lose their farm.

The Lesson: To be a successful farmer, spend your money on good cows, good food, and a simple, clean home for them. Don't build a palace before you have the queens to live in it!
