The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) is taking a bold step in transforming the countryโ€™s dairy and meat production through the introduction of Artificial Insemination (AI) technology for goats.

In an effort to boost productivity and enhance food security, KAGRC is working closely with farmers to implement selective breeding techniques that will improve the quality and quantity of milk and meat production in the country.

Speaking during an open day event with goat dairy farmers at the Kutus Ahiti Domba centre, Kirinyaga County, KAGRC Managing Director Benadette Misoi emphasised the importance of AI in modern farming, describing it as a groundbreaking technology that will help farmers maximize their yields.

Was The event, which attracted a large number of farmers, provided a platform for interaction, knowledge-sharing, and preparation for the official commissioning of a new breeding centre in the next two months.

โ€œToday is a great day for us as we engage with goat dairy farmers, a key segment of livestock farming. AI in goats is a new technology that we are trying to introduce to farmers, with the main objective of increasing productivity. Through selective breeding, we are producing the best semen from our top breeds to ensure higher milk production and better quality meat,โ€ said Misoi.

She explained that KAGRC has a variety of male breeds at its stations, which are used to produce high-quality semen for artificial insemination.

The focus is on both dairy and meat breeds, ensuring that farmers have access to superior genetic material that will enhance their herds.

Misoi expressed her delight at the large turnout of farmers, noting that the interaction was vital in equipping them with essential information about the new technology.

CS Agriculture Mutahi Kagwe has this afternoon officially launched the Nationwide Livestock Vaccination Campaign at Segera Ward, Laikipia County.

This transformative three-year voluntary initiative aims to protect Kenyaโ€™s livestock by administering biannual vaccinations for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and annual vaccinations for Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR). This campaign aligns with national disease control strategies.

Transboundary livestock diseases such as FMD and PPR pose severe threats to cattle, sheep, and goats, leading to substantial losses in productivity, market closures, and economic setbacks. The economic impact is estimated at KSH 62 Billion in lost revenue.

Recent FMD outbreaks have already necessitated quarantines in Kakamega, West Pokot, and Trans Nzoia counties. The Kenyan government, in partnership with County Governments, remains committed to eradicating these diseases to boast productivity and protect animals.

Motto: Let's make dairy and beef farming profitable again.
If you don't treat your cattle normarry they will treat you abnormarry.

Do we do the vaccination on livestock or not.

For me YES

This has been a major concern from the farmers and other in the livestock value chain. I have received calls and text on this and I decided to give my inputs as an expert in the value chain.
First the vaccination is important as it help prevent diseases and protect their health.
The government of kenya is targeting to vaccinate 22million cattle and 50 million sheep and goat majorly on trasboundary diseases like foot and mouth (FMD)and peste des pestitis ruminants (PPR)
Vaccination is a normal activity in the veterinary services.
Most of the counties have been doing it as it improves animal health production, human health, trade and social economic status of the farmers and other traders in animal and animal products.

The government of kenya introduced the information in a manner that confused the kenyans.
First the president took a role of the experts who could have done in a correct way possible. Second the farmers are not aware which are the diseases being vaccinated.

This lead to issue that the animals are being vaccinated to prevent farting(kunyamba)
For me, I tend to thin this is not true side of the information.
FARTING
This is the release of gas from the intestines through the a**s. Cattle consume grass and during the conversion of fibres to usefull products they generate gases , mainly the methane.
Methane is one of the powerful greenhouse gases that causes the climate change.
In 2021 more that 150 countries signed an agreement to reduce these gases by about 30% by 2030.
One of the way is through vaccination, upto date no vaccination have been developed by the process in its final stages. The ruminants including cattle will be given vaccination to stop the methanogen bacteria from producing methane.
The methane can be reduced by other methods such as :
1.Dietary changes
2.Feed additives
3.Grazing management
4.Selective breeding
Each of the ways will be discussed in future articles.

The government need to stop the noice and chest kicks on stated vaccination by engaging the key stakeholders and providing full disclosure on the programme without profiling the kenyans who question the real intention of the administration.
