The cause of lameness in the horse from our insta story was RINGBONE!
Ringbone is a form of osteoarthritis. It is a form of joint disease where excess bone is laid down inside or around the joints of the limbs. This excess bone can cause pain and interfere with the normal working of the joint and can be extremely serious causing Degenerative Joint Disease or osteoarthritis.

The yellow arrows on the radiograph point at bone exostosis which is also know as extra bone growth.

The cause of this condition in this particular case is believed to be the poor confrontation of the foot (boxy foot) and the hard terrain on which the horse is commonly used.

Ever heard of the body’s immune system attacking itself?
The above phenomenon results in what we call an autoimmune disease.

Here we have a case of canine pemphigus which is an autoimmune disease of the skin.

Pemphigus is a group of 5 autoimmune skin diseases characterized by vesicles and bullae (large and small "blisters") in the mouth and at mucocutaneous junctions (the junction between skin and mucosal tissues). Commonly affected areas include the eyelids, lips, nostrils, and a**s.

In this case the most likely form of pemphigus is pemphigus erythematosus (PE). The term means "red and inflamed pemphigus" and its most common symptom is redness, crusting, scales and hair loss on the nose. Exposure to ultraviolet light worsens this form of pemphigus.

This case responded tremendously to medical treatment within just a few days and so far has been constantly improving!

1- Crusty lesions on the nose particularly at the mucocutaneous junction can be seen.
2- Results after 1 week of treatment and the lesions have already started healing.

It’s that time of the year again. Following the short spell of rain and constant sunshine, tick fever and flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is on the rise.
Hope your fur friends have the protection they need to prevent the above.

Remember Watson the male Dalmatian?
He was brought to the clinic as he was unable to urinate.

On examination we found a urolith (bladder stone) at the terminal end of the pe**le urethra (OUCH!).
The urolith was successfully removed and a catheter (urinary catheter) introduced up until the bladder to ensure there was no other blockage along the urethra (luckily there wasn’t any other).

Thankfully the owner responded immediately and didn’t let the dog carry on for a few more days as this would have worsened the condition.

Watson is currently on medication and a prescription diet to prevent the uroliths from reoccurring and causing a blockage.

The stones have been sent for analysis to determine their composition (our bets are on urate crystals)

Many may not know this but Dalmatians amongst other dog breeds are predisposed to uroliths.
Dalmatians carry a genetic mutation that alters the way they metabolize and excrete purines which are found in many foods, especially meats.
Due to the above biological process, Dalmatians are unable to convert uric acid which can then be excreted via their urine. Therefore, their urine contains high levels or uric acid and are prone to uroliths made up of urate crystals.

SWIPE LEFT TO SEE MORE PICTURES FROM THIS CASE!

1- This shows some of the uroliths removed with one of them measuring almost 4mm in diameter.

2- A radiograph of the abdomen showing the bladder which has no visible stones. Most radiographs may not show urate bladder stones and hence an ultrasound was done.

3- An ultrasound picture showing the bladder and hyperechoic particles (uroliths) floating within the bladder can be clearly seen. These particles measured on average less than 1mm and should easily pass through the urethra.

We are extremely excited to share this case with you!
We had a cat come in to the clinic with what seemed to be an “angry” looking eye.
At first our vets treated for what seemed to be a conjunctivitis and asked to see the cat after 2 days for a follow up treatment.
When the cat returned, the eye had only gotten worse! This surprised the vets as they were expecting an improvement.
Upon further examination, it felt that the eye was being pushed out (proptosis) by a retrobulbar-space occupying lesion.
The client consented to a CT scan which is the most ideal way of visualizing such lesions and our vets found what they had been suspecting- a retrobulbar abscess!
After discussing the options with the client, it was decided to enucleate the affected eye.
The patient is on his way to recovery!

1- CT scan of the head showing the normal eye (yellow arrow) and the affected eye (blue arrow) with the retrobulbar abscess clearly visible.

2- Cat being positioned for the CT scan to commence.

3- Affected eye (white arrow) before surgery.

4- Eye after enucleation surgery.

We’d like to thank our amazing clients who bend over backwards to ensure their pets receive the best care possible!

We would also like to thank our diagnostic laboratory who allowed us to use their CT machine on this patient.

This is most probably the first ever CT scan done on an animal in Kenya.

Together we can better the lives of animals in this world!

GREAT NEWS GUYS!

Remember the kitten from our previous post? The one which was exhibiting signs of Panadol (Acetaminophen) poisoning?
He’s improved tremendously and is almost back to being a playful kitten again!

Our post today is geared towards client education.
PLEASE CONSULT A VET BEFORE ADMINISTERING ANY MEDICATION TO ANIMALS.
We had a 4 month old kitten brought in today because he was unable to walk properly and seemed to be in pain.
The owner gave the kitten one Panadol the previous night to help with the pain.

Panadol (acetaminophen) is highly toxic to cats! It causes damage to the liver and affects the oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells.

The cat was brought in exhibiting signs of acetaminophen toxicity as shown in 3 pictures below.

1- The arrow (white) shows facial swelling.
2- The arrow (black) shows cyanotic mucous membranes.
3- The arrow (white) shows cyanotic mucous membranes.
4- An improvised oxygen chamber.

Although the prognosis for survival is grave, we are trying our best to give this little kitten a fighting chance 🤞🏽

Today we had an unusual feline surgery.
This male cat was brought in for a routine castration which turned out to be not so routine!
Monorchidism is the state of having only one testicle within the sc***um.
We had a monorchid cat whose retained testicle was present at the level of the inguinal canal.

2- In this picture, you are able to see the descended testicle and the p***s clearly.

Here’s an interesting case of pyometra for you guys!
Pyometra is an infection in the uterus which is considered serious and life threatening if not treated quickly and aggressively.
We therefore urge you to spay your bi***es (unless you want to breed them) so as to avoid such an occurrence.

This bitch came in with a history of not having eaten her breakfast or lunch properly and the owner was worried.
We also managed to find out that the bitch has been having irregular cycles of heat.

Upon examination, all her vitals were within normal limits and the food being fed was of good quality.
Her teeth however, had significant buildup of plaque and the gums exhibited signs of active gingivitis.

We took some blood for laboratory analysis which came back showing a slight monocytosis.

We scheduled the patient in for a dental scaling and decided to carry out an abdominal ultrasound to find a FULL BLOWN PYOMETRA!

The clinical signs and blood picture were very vague for such an advanced case of pyometra.

1- This shows an ultrasound image of the pyometra. You are able to make out the fluid filled (pus) sacs of the uterus.

2- This is an image of the infected uterus being exteriorized from the abdominal cavity. The pus filled sacs are obvious to spot here!

3- The arrows point out cysts which are very likely the cause of irregular heat cycles.

4- Upon aspiration of the fluid from the uterus, it was confirmed to be pus as shown by the content of the syringe.
