WHEN CAN I HARVEST MY WATERMELON?

How do you know your watermelon 🍉 are ready?
Major signs every farmer should watch for includes:

a. The Tendril Test
Check the curly tendril closest to the fruit stem. When it turns brown and dries up, your watermelon is usually ready for harvest.

b. Ground Spot (Field Spot)
Look at the part of the watermelon resting on the soil. It should change from white to creamy yellow—a clear sign of maturity.

c. Sound Test
Tap the fruit gently. A deep, hollow sound indicates ripeness, while a dull sound may mean it’s not ready.

d. Skin Appearance
The rind becomes dull (not shiny) and hard. A shiny watermelon is often still immature.

e. Days After Planting
Most watermelon varieties are ready 75–90 days after planting, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

What farmers should avoid;
Harvesting too early—watermelons do not continue ripening after they are picked.
Harvesting watermelon at the perfect time makes the difference between a sweet, juicy fruit and a low quality one.

Patience pays! Give your crop the right time, and you’ll enjoy sweeter fruits, better market prices, and satisfied customers.

PAWPAW FARMING

One acre of pawpaw will accommodate 1000- 1100 trees with the common spacing of 2x2 meters ( from tree to tree 2m and from row to row is also 2m .

The size of the hole should be 2 by 2 ft and a depth of 2 ft.
Make sure you separate the top soil from the subsoil. The first 1ft is the top soil.
Each tree will need 1 full bucket of manure(20l bucket)
Goat or chicken manure is better since it contains more nutrients.

Pawpaw trees do not need a lot of water to grow . In fact, they are drought tolerant. However, they will need to be irrigated during the dry seasons in order to grow faster and produce tasty fruits of a good size. I will suggest that you dig a dam and line it up.

While irrigating, though, you should keep in mind that the trees cannot tolerate waterlogged soils. If the soils are too wet even for 24 hours, the trees develop root rot and eventually die.

Pawpaw ' hates' shade, they perform poorly on shade hence the place you will be planting should be open or with very few trees that should be pruned often.

TIPS ON POTATO FARMING
1.Land Preparation and Planting
Land Preparation-Plough the land, loosen the soil with a harrow, and incorporate organic manure (4 tonnes per acre).
Ridges-Create hilled rows (ridges) to promote tuber growth.
Seed Selection-Use certified seed potatoes (40-60g, at least two buds).
Planting-Plant seeds 10-15 cm deep, with rows 75 cm apart and plants 30 cm apart.
Fertilization- Apply phosphate fertilizers like DAP at planting and add organic fertilizers like compost.
2. Crop Management:
Hilling: Mound soil around plants after 2-3 weeks to protect tubers from sunlight.
W**d Control: Regularly remove weeds to prevent competition for resources. Consider mulching to suppress weeds.
Pest and Disease Control: Implement integrated pest management strategies, including good sanitation, proper plant spacing, and preventative measures.
Watering: Potatoes need 400mm to 800mm of water during the growing season.
3. Timing:
Planting: In Kenya, plant during the rainy seasons (Long rains: March-April, Short rains: October-November) to ensure sufficient moisture.
4. Key Considerations when venturing into potato farming.
Disease Resistance: Choose varieties resistant to common diseases in your area.
Soil Testing: Conduct soil tests to determine nutrient deficiencies and tailor fertilization accordingly.
Harvesting: Dig up the potatoes when the plants are dry and mature, typically 2-3 weeks after stem cutting.
