A viral video of a dog “looking funny” has been making rounds on Kenyan social media — shared tens of thousands of times. But behind the laughs was a heartbreaking reality.

💔 Mickey wasn’t a stray. He lived with someone. His shocking condition is a result of neglect and prolonged suffering. He was in so much pain he had to be sedated just to be groomed. Our team removed 2.1 kg of filthy, matted hair — a quarter of his body weight.

Thanks to those who helped us trace him — especially the anonymous person who pinpointed the location of the video, and everyone who connected us with people who could help. You made the rescue possible.

Neglect is not just sad — it’s a crime. If you cannot care for a dog, please don’t keep one.

We’ve found a female dog in Spring Valley (23rd April) and a ginger male cat in Hillcrest (15th April).

If you think one of them could be yours, please reach out ASAP — proof of ownership is needed, and animals are only held for two weeks before rehoming.

Please help us to help animals.

Our shelters are full and we want to help genuine cases. But there is a limit to what we can do. Our shelter in Nairobi has twice as many animals as it should. If we take too many animals it can provoke serious disease outbreaks and cause stress. We also just can't afford to feed them all.

Sadly a lot of the calls we receive are about issues that are preventable. if you're a parent, your children's animals are your animals. Animals get old and have medical needs. If you applied for a job in another country, you need to decide when you apply what you will do with your animals. It's not a big surprise that if you keep animals without sterilising them they will have babies. We get that life is tough, but your animals are your responsibility, and pressurising the KSPCA doesn't change that.

We can help. We want to help. We can try to support with rehoming, but it takes time. Sterilisation and other health care is affordable if you are a KSPCA member. let us know how we can help and we will do our best.
