The Silver Appleyard is a dual-purpose duck breed from the United Kingdom, prized for both its large, white eggs and flavorful meat. Originally developed in the 1930s, this heritage breed is known for its attractive silver-patterned plumage and its calm, docile temperament. History
The breed was created by Reginald Appleyard, a renowned poultry breeder from Suffolk, England.
He aimed to produce a duck with an appealing appearance, good size, and a high output of large, white eggs.
After World War II, the breed became very rare, but it was revived in the 1980s by Tom Bartlett of Folly Farm.
In the United States, the Livestock Conservancy lists the Silver Appleyard as "threatened" to help ensure its preservation.
Appearance
Size: As a heavy breed, drakes weigh between 8 and 9 pounds, and ducks weigh approximately 8 pounds.
Drakes: The drake has an iridescent green head and neck with silver markings on the face. His breast is a rich claret, the body is silver-white, and the wings feature a blue stripe.
Ducks: The duck has a silvery-white head and neck, with the rest of her body covered in creamy-white plumage flecked with gray and fawn.
Other features: The bill is yellow or greenish-yellow with a dark tip. Their legs and feet are orange.
Temperament and behavior
Calm and friendly: Silver Appleyards have a docile temperament and are not flighty. They can become quite social with proper handling.
Good foragers: They are active foragers, constantly searching for insects, slugs, and snails. This helps to reduce feed costs and manage garden pests.
Non-flying: Due to their heavy weight, they are unable to fly, which helps keep them close to home.
Broody: Ducks often go broody and can be excellent, attentive mothers.
Purpose
Egg production: The hens are highly prolific layers, producing 200–270 extra-large, white eggs per year.
Meat production: They are fast-growing birds that yield a carcass of lean, flavorful meat. They are ready for the table at around nine weeks of age.
Ornamental: Their striking plumage also makes them popular as an exhibition and show breed.
