The East Coast Fever (ECF) Vaccinators Training was successfully conducted at VSRI from 9thโ€“11th December, bringing together participants for an intensive, hands-on learning experience aimed at strengthening ECF control in the field.

Over the three days, trainees were taken through key areas including the background of ECF, Infection and Treatment Method (ITM) immunization, the economic impact of the disease, and proper vaccine handling and storage. They also had an opportunity to tour various laboratoriesโ€”among them the Hematology Labโ€”to deepen their understanding of diagnostic and research processes essential for disease management.

The programme also featured a practical farm visit to Kamuguga, where trainees applied their newly acquired knowledge in real farm conditions. The training concluded with the awarding of certificates, marking an important milestone for all participants.

๐Ÿ“ข Strengthening International Collaboration in Animal Health ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

This past week, KALRO - Veterinary Science Research Institute had the honor of hosting Professor Fabio Santoni, the Italian Ambassadorโ€™s Scientific Attachรฉ to Kenya. The embassy rep was hosted by - Deputy Director General - Livestock and the Institute Director Dr Monicah Maichomo. Also in attendance was representing the Director of Veterinary Services. Discussions focused on advancing animal health research, disease control, Public Health and livestock livelihoods in Kenya and Italy. Key collaboration prospects include student and faculty exchange, staff mobility, and a WOAH joint lab twinning initiative on CBPP between the National Veterinary Laboratories and KALRO-VSRI. Strengthening partnerships with Italian counterparts will drive impactful research and innovation in veterinary sciences.

KALRO's Veterinary Science Research Institute, Muguga, Kenya brought together stakeholders in the East Coast Fever (ECF) vaccine space whose focus is on vaccine research, production and last-mile delivery as well as end users of the vaccine (cattle keepers). The discussions were enriching, the resolutions were resolute and the stakeholders were happy to have been brought on board. Soon, we will be able to have the ECF Marikabuni Vaccine registered by the VMD and available for use across the country as well as revamped and sustainable production of the Muguga Cocktail for use in the region.
