It’s dinner time but what’s taking so long?
What are you feeding your cats?Did you know that cats are obligate carnivores?What this means is that cats need meat i.e.Animal based protein to thrive.Recommended sources are boneless beef,fish or chicken .If making a home based diet ,the above should be served cooked(boiled)-No salt or oil should be added.
If you prefer commercial food either wet or dry food (Kibble diet),check on the ingredient list.The content of crude protein (preferably hydrolysed ) should be atleast 26% in dry matter.Kitten food generally should a higher percentage of crude protein between 28-40%.

TGIF:-Case of the week.
Contact dermatitis in a cat also known as Chin acne.We were doing a routine exam as a housecall and noticed balding and darkening of the skin around the chin.On more history taking ,we found client had recently introduced a plastic water bowl .
We were happy to identify the culprit /cause of the chin acne.
Should your cat show similar signs ,please contact a licensed veterinary surgeon for accurate and timely diagnosis.
Other signs noted with this condition are the rubbing of the chin on surfaces or using the paws.Dark/black debri that looks like dirt/soil on the chin.
Should your vet confirm the diagnosis,replace plastic bowls with stainless steel or glass bowls that should be wide enough not to interfere with the comfort and sensitivity of the whiskers.

Today is World Asthma Day.
Did you know that animals also suffer from Asthma?
Patient S ,brought inn with a history of persistent caughs mostly observed in the mornings and at night.
On examination:-Wheezing sounds picked on auscultation,Labored breathing and an increased respiratory rate.
Xray taken to confirm diagnosis.
Patient started on treatment and response has been great.
Feline Asthma is an allergic respiratory disease in cats .
Generally a progressive disease that gets worse if no medical intervention is done .
Additional clinical signs to the ones seen above include cats having a hunched body towards the ground while extending neck forward (Asthma attack),bloody sputum after caughing etc.
Should your cats show any of the listed clincal signs ,please have a veterinarian examine the cat to also rule out other respiratory diseases that would present with similar clinical signs.
Feline asthma doesnt have any known cure yet but the disease can be managed by eliminating potential allergens and medical management to address any potentially life threatening complications arising from difficulty in breathing.
