I wanted a bigger farm, so I went out and hired land. I came across this beautiful, expansive piece next to Athi River near Kilimambogo. I fell in love instantly โ€” without thinking much or asking many questions, I paid for a 3-year lease on the spot.

Let me tell you Maina โ€” foolishness is costly! love at first sight in farming is a su***de!

I planted onion seeds in the nursery. One morning I woke up to find all my nursery beds turned into a dance floor overnight. Hippos had visited โ€” destroyed everything. Tears rolled down, but I didnโ€™t give up. I fenced the place semi-permanently and went on to plant tomatoes.

Everything went well until harvest time. After the first harvest, heavy rains came. One morning, as I went with buyers, I found all my tomato plants floating in the river. My entire 5-acre field washed away. That day, I cried like a little baby craving for breast milk.

My friend, farming foolishly not only costs you money โ€” it can break you literally into pieces.

Before you hire land, unlearn, learn, and relearn. Ask all the questions you need:
โœ… Is the area prone to flooding?
โœ… Are there wildlife risks like hippos or elephants?
โœ… Who is the true owner โ€” and is there a written lease?
โœ… What do the neighbours say about the landโ€™s history?

Do your due diligence. Donโ€™t fall in love with the land before you understand it.
Farming teaches humility โ€” but remember: foolishness is costly, and experience is an expensive teacher.

๐Ÿงฑ Step-by-Step Guide to Turning Animal Dung into Charcoal Briquettes

This method works not only with pig dung, but also with cow dung, goat, sheep, chicken, rabbit, horse, and donkey waste. These are all great sources for making charcoal briquettes.

Step 1: Collect and Dry the Dung
Start by gathering animal wasteโ€”pig, cow, goat, chicken, or any combination. Spread it out under the sun until itโ€™s completely dry. Dry dung is easier to work with and burns better.

Step 2: Add Agricultural Waste
Mix the dried dung with things like sawdust, rice husks, maize stalks, or dry leaves. This helps the briquettes burn longer and cleaner. You donโ€™t need to be exactโ€”just aim for a good balance between dung and plant waste.

Step 3: Crush Everything
Use a grinder or crush the mix by hand until it becomes fine and powdery. The finer the mix, the better the briquettes will hold together and burn.

Step 4: Add a Binder
To make the mix stick together, add a binder. You can use cassava starch, flour, or even clay. Mix the binder with water to make a paste, then stir it into your crushed dung mixture.

Step 5: Mold the Briquettes
Shape the mixture into small blocks or balls. You can use your hands, a simple mold, or a press. Make sure to press them tightly so they donโ€™t crumble.

Step 6: Dry the Briquettes
Lay them out in the sun for several days until theyโ€™re completely dry. If it rains, cover them with plastic or move them indoors. Dry briquettes burn better and last longer.

Step 7: Carbonize (Optional)
If you want charcoal briquettes, youโ€™ll need to carbonize them. Place the dried briquettes in a metal drum with small air holes and burn them slowly with limited oxygen. This turns them into charcoal, which burns hotter and cleaner.

Step 8: Store or Sell
Once theyโ€™re ready, store them in a dry place. You can use them at home for cooking or heating, or sell them to neighbors, shops, or restaurants. People love them because theyโ€™re cheap, clean, and eco-friendly.

๐Ÿ’ก Why This Is a Smart Move

- Youโ€™re turning waste into something useful.
- You save money on cooking fuel.
- You help reduce deforestation and pollution.
- You can start smallโ€”even without land or big money.
- You can earn extra income by selling briquettes.
