やんばるを代表する山のひとつ、
伊部岳（いぶだけ）。
沖縄県国頭村に位置し、
標高は352m。

山頂からは、どこまでも続く
やんばるの森と美しい東海岸を望むことができ、その豊かな森には多くの生きものたちが暮らしています✨

そんな伊部岳周辺の
林道を走っていると……🚗💨

ちょこんと
道路に出てきたのは、
「ホントウアカヒゲ（メス）」

尾羽を上下に揺らしながら、
なぜかこちらへ向かってくる……😳

逃げるどころか、
「なにしてるの？」と言わんばかりに
好奇心いっぱいの目でこちらを見ながら、どんどん接近💦

でも、ここは……
道路のど真ん中！

「危ないよ〜😂」

ようやく森の中へ意識を向けたと
思ったら、
今度はガードレールで毛づくろい🪶✨

なんともマイペースなアカヒゲ☺️

世界自然遺産のやんばるの森には、
こんな愛らしい生きものたちが暮らしています。

山の日は🌳山の恵みや
自然の大切さを感じる一日✨

そして、やんばる路を走行🚗する際は、
そこに暮らす生きものたちにも少しだけ目を向けてみてください🌿

もしかしたら、
思いがけない“生きもの”との

🌿August 11 is Mountain Day in Japan

Ibudake, one of the mountains that represents Yanbaru, stands in Kunigami Village, Okinawa Prefecture, at an elevation of 352 meters.

From the summit, you can take in breathtaking views of the endless Yanbaru forest and the beautiful east coast.

This rich and vibrant forest is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife. 🌿

A female Ryukyu Robin　 suddenly appeared on the road.

Instead of flying away, she began hopping closer and closer, her tail bobbing up and down, as if asking,
“What are you doing?” 😳

Curious and fearless, she kept approaching us...

But there it was… right in the middle of the road!

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to everyone affected by the recent typhoon.

We sincerely hope for the safety of everyone in the affected areas and for a swift recovery and restoration.

After a typhoon, strong winds and heavy rain can leave wild birds and animals exhausted, injured, or displaced.

What should you do if you come across one?

🐣 If it's a chick or young bird, please don't rescue it right away.
Observe from a safe distance first. Its parents may still be nearby and caring for it.

⚠️ If the animal is clearly injured, severely weakened, or stranded in a dangerous location,
please contact Okinawa Prefecture's Nature Conservation Division before attempting a rescue.

A new documentary by “Japan Wire by Kyodo News” journalist Naoki Hiraoka has been released on YouTube:

"A Flightless Bird, A Future to Protect — Five Years Since World Natural Heritage Inscription."

We had the privilege of joining Mr. Hiraoka in the Yanbaru Forest before dawn.

In the quiet forest, we witnessed an Okinawa Rail descending from its roosting tree and beginning a new day.

Five years have passed since Yanbaru was inscribed as a World Natural Heritage Site.

What can each of us do to help secure the future of this remarkable flightless bird?

昨日ご紹介した、
おっとりマイペースな性格の
「ケナガネズミ」

環境省レッドリスト絶滅危惧ⅠB類に指定されているこの貴重な生きものが、
今、深刻な危機に直面しています。

今年7月23日時点で確認された
ロードキル（交通事故）は【36件】
これは、昨年1年間の25件をすでに大きく上回っています。

本来、交通事故が増えるのは
秋から冬の繁殖期。
それにもかかわらず、この時期ですでに
＼36件／という状況は非常に深刻です。

ケナガネズミは落ち葉に溶け込むような体色をしているため、
夜の道路では見つけにくく、人をあまり恐れないため
車が近づいても慌てて逃げないことがあります。

こうした習性が、
ロードキルにつながり
このままでは、過去最多のロードキルとなることも懸念されています。

🚗 やんばるを運転するときは、
　　スピードを控えめに。
🌙 夜間や早朝は野生動物が
　　活発に活動する時間帯です。

「いつ飛び出してきても止まれる速度」での運転をお願いします。

人間活動による気候変動などを、
一人の力で変えることは難しいかもしれません。
しかし、ロードキルは私たち
一人ひとりの運転で減らすことができます。

Yesterday, we introduced the gentle and easygoing
Ryukyu long-furred rat.
This remarkable animal is listed as **Endangered (EN)on Japan's Ministry of the Environment Red List, and it is now facing a serious crisis.

As of July 23, 2026,
３6 roadkill incidents　had already been recorded.
This has already far exceeded the 25 cases recorded during the entire previous year.

Roadkill involving the Ryukyu long-furred rat normally increases during the autumn and winter breeding season.
The fact that 【36】animals have already been killed by July is therefore extremely alarming.

皆さんは
＼ケナガネズミ／をご存じですか？

環境省のレッドリスト絶滅危惧ⅠB類に
指定されている、日本最大のネズミです。

20年ほど前までは「幻のネズミ」と呼ばれ、おじいさん・おばあさんの世代でも、ほとんど目にすることがありませんでした。

たまに交通事故などで死亡した
個体が見つかるたびに、
「まだ生き残っていたんだね」
と言われるほど、珍しい存在だったのです。

その後、森林が回復し
マングースやネコ対策などの
保全活動が進んだことで、2009年ごろから少しずつ観察されるようになり、
夜🌙のやんばるでは出会える機会も増えてきました。

しかし、その生態は今も分からないことだらけ🤔
そして、ぜひ知っていただきたい
特徴があります☝🏻

🌿ケナガネズミは、
　　人をあまり恐れません。
🌿道路の真ん中に座ってエサを
　　食べることもあります。

ヤンバルクイナ以上に、
おっとりマイペースな性格。

体は鼻先から尻尾まで約60cmにもなる
日本最大のネズミですが、
危険が迫っても慌てて逃げないことも
珍しくありません。

この習性が、今、大きな危機につながっています…。

Have you ever heard of the
＼ Ryukyu Long-furred Rat?／

Listed as Endangered (IB)on Japan's Ministry of the Environment Red List, it is the **largest rat species in Japan**.

Until about 20 years ago, it was known as the "phantom rat."
Even many local grandparents had never seen one in the wild.

Whenever a road-killed individual was found, people would often say,

"So they were still out there..."

It was that rare.

As the forests recovered and conservation efforts—such as controlling mongooses and feral cats—began to take effect, sightings gradually increased from around 2009 onward.

ヤンバルクイナの絶滅を回避して、
やんばるの豊かな森の生物多様性を
次世代に繋いでいくことが私たちの
目標です。
そのために、生息域内保全と
生息域外保全の両輪で活動してきました。

生息域外保全の主な活動が
ヤンバルクイナの飼育下での繁殖です。

その活動を支えてくださっているのが、
ナチュラルペットフーズ(株)様です。

2015年から現在まで
＼合計2,832缶／ものコオロギ缶を
ご支援いただいています。

救護された野生個体が人工飼料に
慣れるまで、また体調を崩した個体は
食欲が落ちることがありますが、
コオロギは大好物✨
食欲がない個体でも食べてくれることが多いので、
治療で投薬するときにコオロギの中に薬を隠して確実に飲んでもらうためにも
欠かせません。

今年、東村で卵で救護され、
私たちが人工孵化したヤンバルクイナです。
美味しそうに食べてくれています😊

１0年以上にわたり、
変わらぬご支援を続けてくださっている
ナチュラルペットフーズ(株)様のおかげで、ヤンバルクイナの満足度を上げ、
日々の飼育管理や治療に大きく役立っています。

Our goal is to prevent the extinction of the Okinawa Rail and preserve the rich biodiversity of the Yanbaru Forest for future generations.

To achieve this, we have been working on both **in-situ conservation(protecting wildlife in its natural habitat) and
ex-situ conservation (conservation through captive breeding). One of our key ex-situ conservation efforts is the captive breeding of the Okinawa Rail.

Supporting this important work is

Total of ＼2,832／ cans of canned crickets.

７月24日、
クイナダイヤルに
「ヤンバルクイナが道路に横たわっている」との連絡が入り、NPOスタッフが
県道2号線の現場に急行しました。

現場到着時、ヤンバルクイナは
かろうじて立っていましたが、
左脚から出血しています。　

急いで施設へ搬送し、酸素吸入をしながら緊急処置を行いましたが、
願いもむなしく、死亡してしまいました。

今年生まれた若いヤンバルクイナを
私たちは助けてあげられませんでした。

事故の直前まで餌をとっていたらしく、
若いヤンバルクイナを搬送した
救護用ダンボール（どうぶつレスキューボックス）の中には、
大好きなカタツムリがたくさん吐き出されていました。

2026年の交通事故確認件数　　
（7月23日時点）
・ヤンバルクイナ 26件（うち25件死亡）
・ケナガネズミ 36件（全て死亡）

回収されたヤンバルクイナは、
死因を明らかにするため、
全てどうぶつたちの病院沖縄に搬入され
検査をしています。

これまで検査をしたヤンバルクイナは1200羽を超えています。

必要なのは、治療じゃなくて、
車のスピードを落とすこと！
　
今すぐ、誰にでも、できること。

[Roadkill That Won’t Decrease]

On July 24, we received a report through the Okinawa Rail Hotline that an Okinawa Rail was lying on the road. Our NPO staff immediately rushed to the scene on Prefectural Route 2.

When we arrived, the Okinawa Rail was barely able to stand and was bleeding from its left leg. We quickly transported the bird to our facility, where emergency treatment was provided with oxygen support. Despite our best efforts, the bird sadly passed away.

We were unable to save this young Okinawa Rail, which was born earlier this year.

It appeared to have been feeding just before the accident. Inside the rescue transport box (Animal Rescue Box), we found many snails—the Okinawa Rail’s favorite food—that it had regurgitated during transport.

Confirmed roadkill cases in 2026 (
