Vista Line --- a historical view

Visiting Daijuji Temple, you often see some people looking outside through the Main Gate. There is a lot to see in the temple; however, another purpose to go there is to see Okazaki Castle from the Main Gate of the temple. It is 3km away from the castle, and there are no obstacles in between. This straight view is called Vista Line.

In 1641 the Edo era, the 3rd Sh**un Tokugaw Iemitsu, who respected his grandfather Tokugawa Ieyasu, erected the temple to be able to see Okazaki Castle from Daijuji that Tokugawa Ieyasu was enshrined in the temple. Since then, the view has been preserved for 380 years.

At present, in order to keep this view, 92 metal rivets are installed on the road of the Vista Line. It might be fun to find some rivets on the road!

Shououji Temple and Shououji-Yokochou Alley
Do you know the relationship between Tokugawa Ieyasu and and Shououji Temple? Ieyasu’s father, Hirotada Matsudaira was buried here and after his death, Ieyasu planted a pine tree on his grave, praying for the Matsudaira clan’s prosperity. Later in 1560, Ieyasu built a family temple and named the temple “Shououji”, with ‘shou’ in the kanji ‘松’ meaning ‘a pine tree’ and ‘ou’ in the kanji ‘應’ meaning ‘living up to one’s expectations.’ Shououji Temple is now designated as one of the city’s premier historical sites. At the back of the temple building, you will see the “Byoushoumon” gate. The wooden gate was painted in vermillion, which is said to have been quite unique at that time. You can also see a temple bell there, which was built in 1635 and is still used now.
Shououji-Yokochou Alley leads to the temple. You can see a wooden arcade of small shops alongside the narrow alley. Here you can eat sweets while enjoying a delicious cup of coffee. There is also a secondhand shop where you can buy kimonos and traditional Japanese items. In one of the alleys, you will see a temple named Taishido which was built in 1805 and dedicated to Prince Shotoku. On the 22nd of every month, which is the day of Prince Shotoku’s passing, the inside of the temple is exhibited to the public.

Daijuji Temple

Once you go in the precincts through the majestic main gate, you feel like stepping back to four hundred years ago.

Daijuji Temple, a family temple of Tokugawa Sh**un and their ancestors, is famous as the place where Ieyasu made a comeback.

During the waring sates period, when Tokugawa Ieyasu was 19 years old, he barely escaped the battle and fled to the temple. Ieyasu determined to commit seppuku, su***de; however, the temple’s abbot, Toyo Shonin, dissuaded him and gave him words. “Onri Edo, Gongu Jodo”, which means to abandon the impure world and aspire to the Pure Land. Since then, keeping the words as a motto throughout his life, he eventually achieved the unification of the whole country.

In the temple grounds, there are precious cultural properties such as a Taho-to, Bell Tower and Main gate. In the treasure house, life-sized mortuary tablets of successive Tokugawa Sh**uns are enshrined.

Two breweries in Okazaki

How about sipping some Japanese sake on a chilly night?
There are two breweries in Okazaki city; Shibata & Maruishi breweries.
Shibata is famous for its sake brands “Kounotukasa”&”Gin”. It is located in the mountainous region in the eastern Okazaki. Taking advantage of the surrounding pristine nature, they use pure and extra soft groundwater, called “Kanzui” -meaning “God’s water” in Japanese- in every step of making sake. So, they can proudly produce exceptionally smooth sake.
Maruishi brewery, on the other hand, is located in the urban area, called Nakamachi and has a more than 330-year history of making sake. They have been producing some brands, “Nito (two rabbits), Mikawabushi (the Mikawa warriors) and “Tokugawa Ieyasu”, etc. Tokugawa Ieyasu was born in Okazaki city and is one of the most renowned sh**un in Japan. He founded the over 260-year stable and peaceful era, known as the Edo period between 1603 and 1868. Now, his name is swimming with the tide because he is taken up as the main character in this year’s historical TV drama. Therefore, their sake, “Tokugawa Ieyasu” will surely be a good choice as a present for sake lovers. In addition, 2023 is the year rabbit in Japanese zodiac signs, so the two rabbits are dressed up on the labels of “Nito” to celebrate the new year. Even after finishing sake, you may enjoy the bottles with those artistic labels as a decoration of your room.
Why don’t you visit those breweries and find your favorite sake?

Tatuki Jinjya Shrine ~The legend of “the Rising Dragon”~

Why don’t you gonna see a dragon?
When you hear the word “dragon”, you might think it evil or monster. However, in the Orient, “dragon” or “ryu”in Japanese is a symbol of power and authority and regarded as a special imaginary creature and respectable as deity or king. Especially for the people of Okazaki, dragons are so special that three nails of dragon are designed on the emblem of Okazaki city.
The old document of the Tatuki Jinjya Shrine says that when Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and the first sh**un of the Tokugawa Sh**unate, was born in the Okazaki castle in 1542 , a golden dragon appeared from the castle’s well and rose up with spouting water from the well and calling clouds and wind. The well locates adjacent to the Tatuki Jinjya Shrine, which is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and Honda Tadakatu, who was very famous as one of the strongest warrior in the warring states period, and had never injured at 57 big battles in his career.
Now you can see the dragon in “Tatuki Jinjya Shrine”. You will find a wooden dragon, elaborately sculptured on the ceiling and about four meters long. Furthermore, those who ask for praying by the shinto priest (the prayer fee is necessary) can hear the majestic voice of the dragon.
Don’t leave the Tatuki Jinjya Shrine without seeing the dragon !!
