There are many ways to train loose leash walking. One easy way to reward your dog for being in position in a loose leash walk is instead of directly giving your dog their treat when they’re at your side, mark (with a clicker or by saying Yes!) and give their treat by tossing it behind your dog. That way your dog has to go backwards for their treat and then forwards again. When they are back at your side after getting the treat, you have another opportunity to reward them for being in the correct position by tossing their treat backwards. You have more opportunities to reinforce a loose leash and your dog also have less opportunities to lunge forward and create leash tension/pull you.

2) Snapping and biting people even as a puppy. Mouthy behavior needs to be curbed at a young age and redirected to toys.
3) Demanding behavior and determining everything that happens in the household
4) Not taking No or escalating behavior when corrected or given appropriate consequences
5) No partnership or relationship with the owner/handler

Canine enrichment for your dog are activities or jobs that allows your dog to fulfill their natural canine needs or breed specific needs, whether that be mental or physical. It allows your dog to be able to express or do what they’re bred to do or what they innately want to do. By providing your dog appropriate enrichment, you can also prevent unwanted behaviors in your home or pent up frustration by giving them an appropriate activity to do instead. Common canine enrichment activities you can provide your dog include activities for sniffing, licking, digging, foraging, shredding, and destuffing. All dogs can benefit from enrichment and it is on the owner to give them these outlets so their dogs can be happy, fulfilled, dogs living in a human world.

Being able to leave the trigger is a management tool for reactive dogs that helps remove them from their trigger. It doesn’t change their state or feelings towards the trigger, that is the training portion, but management tools can still be useful with your reactive dog. Practicing flight cues to help your dog move away from triggers more easily can be beneficial. Start by practicing at home in a low distraction setting with no triggers around with a “let’s go” command, before practicing out in public with no triggers around. Your dog should be turning and following you and you should be rewarding them when they do. Consistent practice in a variety of settings will help your dog strengthen their behavior and do it more reliably when there are triggers around. Practicing often will help your dog be able to respond in the moment when there are triggers.

Are you accidentally teaching your dog to be over stimulated, over excited, pushy, and crazy without even knowing it? You have to be intentional about teaching your dog to be calm. This means:
- Waiting for calm before your greet your dog when you come home
- Waiting for calm before you feed your dog
- Waiting for calm before you put on their leash or walk out the door
- Waiting for calm before you give them access to resources or freedom
It means intentionally watching your own actions, slowing down and making sure you are rewarding your dog at the correct moments, providing boundaries and structure so your dog can learn to be calm.

Do you have a high drive or high energy or working/herding breed? Do you find that they’re still restless or “naughty” even if you walk them daily? If so, your daily walk may not be enough. These dogs are bred for specific tasks and they have natural instincts that need to be worked. A walk for them is barely scratching that need. Besides doing mental stimulation like training, or doing actual dog sports, what these types of dogs need is the freedom to use their senses and nose, space to exert bursts of energy, and a place to be able to use their brain and make decisions. Walks are not bad at all, and it is still wonderful to go out and walk your dog as it’s an enjoyable activity that does provide enrichment and can keep your dog from spilling over in terms of their energy bank. This may mean you have to drive into a remote location to fulfill your dog’s needs and while it is not feasible daily, giving them the outlet whenever you can can do wonders for your dog.

Door manners matter. Teach your dog to respect boundaries and keep them safe. Here is one easy way to teach door manners.

1. Before you open the front or back door, pause before you open the door.
2. Wait to see what your dog does. If your dog sits by themselves, open the door quietly and calmly.
3. If your dog moves towards the door, shut the door.
4. Repeat this every time you open the front or back door.

Over time, your dog will learn to offer the calm behavior on their own without you even needing to say a command. It exercises their impulse control and teaches them manners.

On leash greetings are every dog trainer’s nightmare. Many dog owners think on leash greetings are fine especially if “my dog is friendly” but it is very problematic and can encourage behavioral issues. The leash adds frustration and fuels tension, especially when dogs strain against it. Dogs are unable to move freely so other dogs cannot read their body language accurately, especially an issue for two strange dogs crossing paths for the first time. Your dog should not greet every dog they see. It creates a bad habit of rushing towards other dogs when you’re out in public. Most dogs need to learn how to stay calm around other dogs and be neutral, not have a response to every dog. Your dog should be learning the skill instead that they can see another dog in public or on a walk and stay calm.
