Canine infectious tracheobronchitis - aka 'kennel cough'

We have recently seen an increase in cases of canine infectious tracheobronchitis, also known as 'kennel cough' or 'canine contagious cough'. This illness can be caused by several different viruses & bacteria, with the most common two being 'parainfluenza virus' and 'bordetella bronchiseptica'.

Clinical signs:
• The most common symptom is a forceful 'honking' cough - many owners describe it as sounding like their dog has something stuck in their throat. Bouts of coughing sometimes end with a gag, producing a small amount of frothy phlegm.
• Many dogs remain otherwise bright & well, but some may also have a reduced appetite, lethargy, runny nose and/or high temperature.
• Symptoms usually take 2-14 days to develop after infection and can last for 1 - 3 weeks.
• A small minority of cases can progress to more serious illness such as pneumonia - if your dog develops a 'moist' sounding cough or is having difficulty breathing, please contact your vet urgently.

Treatment:
• In many cases, no treatment is required, and your dog will recover with time & supportive care. Allow your dog to rest, make sure they stay well hydrated, and keep them isolated from other dogs while they are unwell. You can also give them a small amount of honey to help soothe their throats.
• Anti-inflammatory medication may be prescribed to help reduce inflammation in your dog's throat and bring down a high temperature.
• Sometimes your vet may also give your dog an anti-sickness injection.
• Antibiotics are rarely needed to treat kennel cough, but in severe cases, very young/old, immunocompromised and/or brachycephalic animals, they may be indicated.

Prevention:
• Despite the name, dogs do not have to go into kennels to catch kennel cough! It is mainly spread by airborne transmission, so can be passed on whenever dogs share the same airspace & close nose-to-nose contact. Indirect spread can also occur when items such as clothes & toys get contaminated with infectious droplets. Dogs attending kennels, daycare, group dog walks & training sessions are at increased risk.
• If you suspect your dog has kennel cough, please keep them isolated from other dogs while they are coughing
• Vaccination is available against the two most common causes of kennel cough - this does not 100% stop dogs from catching kennel cough, but will reduce the symptoms & onwards transmission if they do.
• The kennel cough vaccine is not a 'core' vaccination like your dog's other annual vaccinations

This week’s fluffy star of the week is… 🥁✨

⭐️💫BRIGGS💫⭐️

Briggs is a sweet and affectionate boy, always happy to receive some love and cuddles, or lay down at your side for a nice scratch when it’s time to chill. 🥰

He adores going out on walks, and runs around with best friends Henry and Otis, the three curly boys! 🤩 This week, Briggs has been extra cheerful, giving us all even more loving and being playful with other pups at daycare, not just his best buds!

His endless love, energy and willingness to play with new furry friends this week, is why Briggs has been chosen as our super star. ✨

Good job, Briggs! Keep it up! 💕 💫

LAIKA 💔💗💔💗 - 🌌 67 years ago, Laika was sent into space.
Today, I feel a duty to commemorate her. Not out of nostalgia, not out of mere scientific curiosity—but out of respect, and for that guilt that still weighs on humanity.

Because Laika wasn't just an experiment.
She was life. A presence. Innocence offered to a stranger.

Her real name was Kuderzhavka, which means "slightly wrinkled" in Russian.
But the world knew her as Laika, "The Barker."
She was a husky, half-terrier, picked up on the icy streets of Moscow. She was just three years old. She was chosen for her quiet, obedient, and resilient nature... as if these qualities could justify the doom that awaited her: to die alone in space.

On November 3, 1957, at 2 a.m., Laika departed aboard Sputnik 2.
The capsule contained food, water, and padded walls. But there was no plan for return. From the start, this journey was nothing more than a death sentence in progress.

Some say she survived for seven hours. Others speak of four days.
Alone all the time. Always in silence.
Suspended in a metal cage, as the Earth continued to spin beneath her—farther away.

It orbited 2,570 times around our planet.
And on April 14, 1958, the capsule disintegrated in mid-air. Consumed by fire, by gravity, By forgetting.

Laika didn't ask to be a hero.
She didn't choose to represent science or the space race.
She was just a little wandering dog with eyes seeking affection—and a body transformed into a tool.

✨ That's why, year after year, I continue to tell her story.
Because it reminds us that all progress is not innocent,
and that often our victories were written in the suffering of those who couldn't say "no."

Laika, we haven't forgotten you.
As long as someone speaks your name, it won't be news.
It will be a memory. It will be familiar.
It will be a reminder of what we don't need to repeat.
