Why Puppy Orientation to Dog Grooming is Important, Luna has been to 3 puppy appointments with Puchi dog grooming, mum had been doing some bathing at home and came to Puchi to get ready for the full groom, during orientation I discovered that some desensitisation was needed for the dryer. I gave Mum some desensitisation training advise and Luna returned for her full groom today completely calm and relaxed with the dryer and the noise 🐶❤️
Introducing your puppy to grooming early is essential for their long-term comfort, health, and overall experience. Here’s why puppy grooming orientation matters:
1. Builds Positive Associations 🐶✨
• Puppies who start grooming early learn that it’s a normal and positive experience.
• Reduces fear and anxiety around grooming tools like clippers, dryers, and brushes.
• Encourages cooperation with groomers, making future visits stress-free.
2. Prevents Grooming Anxiety & Fear
• Puppies unfamiliar with grooming may develop fear-based reactions (biting, whining, or resisting).
• Early exposure helps them feel safe with being handled, bathed, and brushed.
3. Maintains Healthy Skin & Coat
• Regular brushing prevents matting, which can be painful and lead to skin issues.
• Early nail trimming prevents overgrown nails that cause discomfort or joint problems.
4. Easier Grooming as an Adult
• Puppies who experience grooming early adapt better to the process as adults.
• They learn to stay calm during bathing, drying, and styling.
5. Helps with Socialization & Handling
• Puppies get used to being touched by strangers, which helps with vet visits, too!
• Exposure to different sights, sounds, and experiences boosts confidence.
When Should a Puppy Start Grooming?
✔ 8-12 weeks old – Start with short, positive visits (brushing, face trims, nail trims).
✔ 16 weeks+ – Introduce full grooming sessions as their coat develops.
