Tuesday’s Training Tip

When socialising your puppy, make sure he meets new people of both sexes, and of different ages from babies and toddlers to young and elderly adults.

It’s important that he sees people in different situations.. on sunny days with sunglasses on or wearing hats and people holding umbrellas. This is just a starting point, there are many situations your puppy needs to be familiar with during his critical window of socialisation.

Encourage visitors to your home only to give your puppy attention, when he is calm, perhaps when he is sitting. He will soon learn, that by behaving in this manner he receives gentle praise.

Tuesday’s Training Tip

The first few months of your puppies life are so critical and the experiences he has during this time, influence his behaviour as an adult dog.
The breeder should start this process off, but once your puppy becomes a member of your family, then it is your responsibility.
He should be introduced to as many different sights, sounds and smells as possible. You want to make sure these are positive experiences for him.
You do not want to over face him or have him being anxious during this process.
Even before he has had his 12 week vaccination he should be introduced to as many different stimuli as possible and not just in the home.
Carry him outside and allow him to see what’s going on.
Take him in the car, to Garden Centres and other appropriate places, allowing people to come and chat.
We want him to learn that the world is a friendly safe place to be in.

How much exercise is enough for your dog?

The amount of exercise your dog needs has to be calculated on the dog’s, breed, age and overall health.

There is a lot of debate in the dog world about puppies and exercise.

Vets, breeders and trainers all seem to agree that too much exercise is just as bad as not enough.

It is important to keep puppy training simple.

Teach one behaviour at a time and be clear before you start training your puppy what exercise you are going to teach him.

Train in several short sessions throughout the day.

Tuesdays Training Tip:

Learning to read the body language of your dog and other dogs that you meet when on your walks, is so important.
A wagging tail does not always mean that the dog is friendly and happy to interact.
Look at the whole stance of the dog, does he look relaxed … on high alert or nervous?
Not all dogs want to play or want to interact with humans or other dogs that they do not know.

Tuesday’s training tip

When training your dog to do a certain behaviour (for instance sit), he will need to do this on a variety of different surfaces and locations before he understands totally what is asked of him.
It is important to progress at your dog’s speed by slowly adding duration and distractions for these newly training skills.
And remember to always make training fun for your dog.

Tuesdays Training Tip

Having an effective recall with your dog is essential.
If your dog doesn’t come back when called then he shouldn’t have the freedom to be off lead unless he is in an enclosed safe area.
Fingers crossed that your dog comes back is not a recall… It’s an unsafe and dangerous way to exercise him.

Tuesday's Training Tip
Learning something new whether human or canine, is dependent on repetition.
Consistency is the key with any training.
No ifs or buts practice is required.
Break down complicated training routines into small more manageable steps and always make training a happy bonding moment between you and your dog.
