When a dog stops living, even before dying
I was presented with a case of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in an adult female dog.
This is a condition in which the immune system destroys its own red blood cells, causing sometimes severe anemia. The blood can no longer carry oxygen effectively, and the body enters a state of progressive weakness. It is a complex disease, often difficult to stabilize.
After months of treatment, this was the situation:
she was not eating
she would get up only to eliminate
she no longer sought contact
she had lost all initiative
She was not just ill.
She had stopped responding.
The owner did not ask me for a miracle.
She asked whether it was possible to truly improve her quality of life.
In the following weeks, small but meaningful changes began to appear — the kind that matter in clinical practice:
her appetite returned
she started moving again
she resumed social interaction
blood tests showed progressive stabilization
Today, that dog lives a normal life.
This is not a story “against” something or someone.
It is a story that reminds us not to stop when one path is no longer working.
Because sometimes the question is not only:
“How do I treat this disease?”
but also:
“How do I help this animal start living again?”
