Who remembers Hopalong Cassidy and his famous horse, Topper? 🤠🐴
For an entire generation of western fans, Hopalong Cassidy wasn’t just a cowboy hero — he was a legend. And right beside him through countless adventures was his beautiful white horse, Topper. ❤️
William Boyd rode Topper throughout the later Hopalong Cassidy films, public appearances, and the hugely popular television series that helped turn Hoppy into one of the biggest western icons of the 20th century.
Interestingly, Boyd and his wife, actress Grace Bradley, reportedly named the horse after the famous Topper stories by author Thorne Smith — tales that later became successful Hollywood films in the 1930s starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett.
The Hopalong Cassidy phenomenon lasted an astonishing 24 years, from 1935 to 1959. During that time:
⭐ 66 feature films were released
⭐ 52 television episodes aired
⭐ Countless parades, rodeos, charity appearances, and live events followed
By the 1950s, Boyd and Topper had become inseparable in the eyes of the public. Children adored them. Families lined parade routes just to catch a glimpse of the famous cowboy and his horse.
Many fans assume western stars always owned the horses they rode on screen, but that wasn’t usually the case. Early in his career, Boyd often rode rented horses supplied by local stables. It was only later, as Hopalong Cassidy became a national sensation, that Topper truly became his horse.
Sadly, Topper passed away in 1959, one year before Boyd’s planned appearance in the 1960 Tournament of Roses Parade.
But for many fans of classic westerns, Hopalong Cassidy and Topper remain unforgettable symbols of a golden era of television and movie history. 🌵🐎
